Dear INDUS Members
I wanted to share with you an update regarding our participation at the SUGEN (SAP User Groups Executive Network) meeting that was held in Walldorf between 14th and 16th June. I had joined the meeting representing INDUS. Apart from INDUS, we had representatives from the user groups from North America (ASUG), Colombia (ASUG Colombia), Spain, Finland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Middle East and North Africa, UK & Ireland, France, Netherlands, Australia and Japan join the meeting.
Over the three days, we discussed & debated various topics including SAP licensing, innovation adoption, Influencing SAP products and engagement, relevance of user groups and much more.
My notes from the meetings is as below:
• Licensing: We need to work closer with SAP to clarify questions around in-direct licensing.
• Influence SAP Products:
o We, as INDUS, need to be more pro-active to influence the various SAP products through the Customer Connection & Customer engagement projects that SAP runs exclusively with the user groups.
• Topics to be covered in various INDUS forums:
o We need more active participation from our members to identify and prioritise the topics that we cover as part of the various INDUS forums. We will send out a separate email requesting your inputs on the various topics that you would like to see as part of the INDUS forums. Pls do ensure that you respond back to that email.
• Product related discussions:
o SAP is positioning HANA Cloud Platform as the innovation platform, which enables IT organisations to extend their on-premise/cloud product’s based on their individual needs.
o SAP shared that there are 3200+ organisations who have signed-up for S/4 HANA, with about 900+ active implementation projects and already 203 live customers globally. We also got to know that there is a significant improvement in SRM + S/4 HANA + Ariba integrations in the 1610 release of S/4 HANA.
o SAP also indicated that there is a significant investment being made in Machine learning capabilities within SAP. The other topics that are getting a lot of thought are around Cyber Security and API economy and how to enable the same within the SAP ecosystem.
o SAP also shared stats around the Startup ecosystem being built within the SAP ecosystem (inside SAP & through Startup partners), with more than 200 apps already produced through the various programs.
We also held executive exchanges with various SAP executives on topics ranging from SAP’s portfolio strategy to S/4 HANA and how can SAP help its customers adopt innovations better.
Also, I am pleased to inform all our members that we have initiated a project to create a white paper that will intend to create a single source of information for our members when it comes to addressing most of our questions around adopting S/4 HANA. We will keep you posted on the progress.
If you would like to participate in the project, pls do write to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Collaborating with Customers to Drive Digital Transformation- INDUS Oil & Gas SIG Meeting
Digital world is throwing immense opportunities for SAP and equally for our customers too. While we drive digital agenda with each of our key customers, it is also important for us to collaborate with our customers at an industry level to ensure that our approach is grounded with respect to the issues, priorities and requirements that industry as a whole is facing.
With this intent in mind, we at SAP India are driving industry wide customer collaboration as part of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) under the aegis of INDUS. One such interest group representing customers from Oil and Gas industry is an active one and meets twice every year to share the common requirements and priorities besides highlighting best practices and new initiatives that member organizations have taken to benefit each other through collaborative learning. In order to ensure that these interactions are customer centric and driven by customers, the meeting takes place at one of the customer premises.
This time the one day session took place at the premises of Indian Oil Corporation Limited in Gurgaon on 16th June 2016. The full day meeting has an interesting mix of agenda, which included sessions by SAP on digital transformation for Oil and Gas, update on S/4HAHA 1610 release
(SAP IS-Oil Downstream solution) by SAP Labs development team, presentations on new innovations (AIN, Predictive) and presentations by two key customers on recently concluded transformational SAP projects in the areas of finance and operational excellence. The meeting was attended by 39 participants representing 8 of the key Oil and Gas customers –Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited, HPCL Mittal Energy Limited, Cairn India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Essar Oil and GAIL India Limited.
The meeting started with Deepak Agarwal, General Manager (Information Systems), Indian Oil welcoming the participants. Subsequently, Mr. Alok Khanna, Executive Director (Information System), Indian Oil highlighted the need of collaboration among the Oil and Gas community and closely working with SAP to adopt innovations, like SAP HANA. Mr. Nubeel Ansari, Industry Value Advisor Expert (Oil and Gas) and Mr. Vikas Prabhu, CIO Essar Oil, Co-Lead talked about the role that SIG can play in helping the member organization and collaborating more closely with SAP.
Mr. Saj Kumar, Vice President (IoT and Digital Transformation), APJ took the key note session, providing the audience with an overview on the changing paradigm in energy business with the advent of digital energy network. He also highlighted specific use cases of IoT for Upstream, Midstream and Downstream companies that could be the starting point for adopting IoT initiatives. Continuing on the innovation agenda, Development Manager from SAP Labs Mr. Ramkumar Gunnan R along with S/4HANA Oil and Gas development team provided the labs preview of SAP IS-Oil Downstream simplifications and features, which will be part of the 1610 release of S/4HANA. The team also showed the fiori screens, which will be part of the TS-W simplification.
In the second half, HPCL Mittal Energy presented on their recent implementation of treasury management system on SAP. The treasury team member from HPCL Mittal Energy along with the IT team presented on how SAP TRM has made their processes in treasury more robust transparent and effective. Another customer, GAIL India then talked about their Transformational project in the area of pipeline maintenance, wherein they digitalized the entire pipeline maintenance and inspection process through use of SAP Linear Asset Management, SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence, SAP Mobile Platform and SAP Works Manager. The interesting scenario at GAIL involves MII reading tags from SCADA and based on any threshold violation, triggers maintenance notification, which can be delivered to the technician on the mobile device running SAP works manager.
Even the hot and cold Permits are also mobilized to ensure that technicians can start the work while in the field. The final presentation of the day saw SAP showcasing the new and innovation solutions around predictive maintenance and asset collaboration among OEM, operator and service provider. The event came to a close with Essar Oil taking up the lead to organize the next meeting at their head office in Mumbai.
Guest CIO- Nithin Simakuruti, Founder of Vaspp Technologies
SAP acquired Fedem Technology, an innovative and forward thinking Norwegian IoT company. Fedem’s software will enhance SAP’s cloud-based predictive maintenance product and services portfolio.
Fedem’s unique advanced engineering experience and proprietary software modules will be built into SAP’s next generation end-to-end IoT solutions for predictive maintenance as well as real time structural integrity monitoring and Industry 4.0 scenarios.
Fedem currently focuses on offering services in the areas of oil & gas, renewable energy, marine and mechanical industries. The demand for remote monitoring and real-time simulation, especially for expensive assets such as pipelines or offshore wind turbines, is expanding rapidly.
SAP and Fedem see significant opportunity in areas like heavy assets, offshore assets and other IoT assets to create advanced digital models of physical objects in the SAP cloud. The company will be able to harness real time data to model different situations and environments, detect long-term impact of stress and fatigue in order to accurately predict the asset's end of life.
“SAP is the first organization to leverage Newtonian physics to bridge the gap between the digital information technology (IT) world and the physical, operational technology (OT) world”“Combining SAP’s platform capabilities and services with Fedem’s applications allows us to define a new category of physics-driven IoT applications.”
