The culture of openness and knowledge sharing are the prerequisite to the real success of knowledge spaces. Without these, a potential success would be minimal when organically driven by chance and discovery by the users of such space. Although this realization is powerful and lasting the change will only happen over a period of time. Supervisors and bosses need to really understand the concept to allow their staff or subordinates to naturally use the spaces. In general, the design is an open space concept that incorporates elements of flexibility, efficiency in the use of the space, comfort and ergonomics. Common spaces, lounges, for small group discussions were introduced in various locations with facilities that are conducive for teamwork and collaboration. Texture and colors for such spaces will also be soothing and comfortable not only to use but look at as well.

KM brought us new approach in organizing knowledge. Knowledge Mobilization is an important part of the research process. Knowledge mobilization occurs when research knowledge is applied to help facilitate real-world impact on policy and society. It is the process of adapting knowledge to increase research uptake and inform decisions, while also connecting researchers and their work to organizations and communities outside of the university. Common terms used to describe knowledge mobilization or related activities include Knowledge Translation, Knowledge Transfer, and Knowledge Exchange. Knowledge mobilization or transfer require a space for them to communicate, exchange and keep moving.

The knowledge space is not specified as a room as it can also be a small corner in an office or room. It is not just about technology, IT infrastructure and access to information but more importantly about building, in the case of institute of higher learnings, a community of learners and researchers. Research commons need to be a place where researchers could meet and bump into one another for them not just to relax but interact for impromptu knowledge sharing where new knowledge will be created. So how do these research commons would look like? Ray Oldenburg (1999) in his book, The great good place: cafes, coffee shops, bookstores, bars, hair salons and other hangouts at the heart of a community, discusses this phenomena and taking American as a backdrop says, “In the absence of informal life, American are denied those means of relieving stress that serve other cultures so effectively. We seem not to realize that the means of relieving stress can just as easily be built into an urban environment as those features which produce stress. To our considerable misfortune, the pleasures of the city have been largely reduced to consumerism”. p. 10 “In the absence of an informal public life, living becomes more expensive”. p. 11 Expensive because we almost have to pay for everything that used to be available to us free before. To be in a community today you may have to pay for steep club membership. Fees to go to the gym, spas and swimming pools to name a few. All these are required by us to help to manage our stress. Rules and regulations sometimes prohibited us to be at one gathering place just to meet. ...

I remember those days growing up in Kg Gali Tengah, Raub, Pahang when my grandpa’s sundry and coffee shop was always being patronized by the same people every evening for them to relax and meet. When they met they either were talking about the current national events, the happenings in the kampung or just playing checkers (dam haji). The hardship of life and their problems were put away and they were genuinely happy. Late in the evening before Maghrib they dispersed and walked or cycled home for the day. This was a standard routine for most of them. Most people will dismiss this as a culture of wasting time or worse lazy. No doubt they are some truth to that to certain people but they were honest men just gathering at one place every evening to meet, relax and talk. It was their knowledge sharing ritual in a setting that they were most comfortable at. Only recently social scientists concluded that this kind of activities and routine are community culture building, networking and therapy. The Third Place The concept of the third place is not new then but because of new social behavior and thinking induced by the new knowledge that we termed as management thinking we misguidedly destroyed the concept. Knowledge space that actually bears the same concept as research commons, is a term to indicate an area or zone where knowledge activities prevail. This is a conducive space for learning, as well as knowledge sharing with relevant infrastructure and design, are put in place.
