Our campaign to qualify for eligibility for a Gannett Foundation grant came to an end on Friday, May 11th and, in the short four weeks of our fundraising efforts, we were able to move the Career Center's Makery initiative forward significantly. In addition to the outpouring of financial support, the members of the Makery steering committee are buoyed by the clear philosophical alignment of so many members of our community. It's clear through both words and actions that a community makerspace is not only needed, but highly desired and we are proud as ever to make room for it here at the Center. An oversight resulted in some contributions being made on a CrowdRise page that is linked to the Career Center but not to the Makery campaign. Because of this, $2,395 in online donations was not included in the official campaign total, which came in at $225 shy of the $6,000 needed to advance to the next round. That being said, we do have access to all of the funds we raised and funds we continue to raise through the CrowdRise platform. We are extremely encouraged by the more than $2,500 in in-person donations that were made by individuals walking into the Career Center and expressing their support of the initiative. Our grand total is in excess of $10,000 and we will continue our work to bring the Makery to life thanks to this impressive amount of seed money, a $29,794.50 grant from the Fund for Innovation at Middlebury College, and additional grants and funding opportunities we are already pursuing. Please look for more news from the Makery, including events and opportunities this summer, in this newsletter and on our website. On behalf of everyone on the steering committee and at the Career Center, thank you for your support of the Makery!

Learning is sparked every day here at the Career Center... sometimes literally! In this video, Industrial Design student Oliver Roy demonstrates the Tesla Coil he has been building for months as an independent study project. Oliver demoed the coil about two weeks ago, but something wasn't quite right, so he went back to work and the results are more than a little impressive. Thanks to Oliver's mom Elizabeth for capturing the video. We guess sometimes, the eighth's time's the charm! Way to go, Oliver!

College Essay Writing Camp at the Teen Center Applying to college can be stressful, but writing your essay shouldn't be! In this program, we will spend this mornings brainstorming, writing, and workshopping your personal statement and the afternoons hiking, exploring, and enjoying the summer. Zoe Kaslow, our Executive Director, has supported over 100 students write college essays through her work with Overland’s College Essay Camp and her two years of AmeriCorps service with College Possible. She has worked with students exploring all post-secondary options. In addition to morning sessions led by Zoe, staff from Middlebury College Admissions will speak about the power of a college essay. Each student will receive personalized feedback on their essays throughout the week with opportunities to edit and revise. This session runs Monday-Thursday 8:30-4:30 p.m. June 25-28th for rising high school seniors. The session costs $150, but scholarships are available as cost should not be a barrier to college access. Interested? Register here.
