One of the most important aspects of our students' time in their programs is meeting members of the community who might serve as future mentors or employers. Our Diesel Power Technology classes recently visited Andre Bolduc and Charles Wilson of Vermont Fluid Power on two separate occasions. Instruction included hydraulic hose fitting and calculating the theoretical gallons per minute (GPM) of a hydraulic pump by measuring its internal parts. Students also enjoyed a pizza lunch and conversation with the owners about good work habits and life skills. Thank you Andre and Charles!

The Career Center's initiative to create a community maker space in our building is buzzing along and proving both that our community partnerships are as strong as ever and that a resource of this sort is in demand in our area. With just a week to go on our fundraising campaign, we continue to seek contributions on our CrowdRise campaign page. Earlier today, we hosted brunch a tour of the building for more community members interested in supporting this endeavor. Guests included representatives from Tesla Energy, the Addison County Economic Development Corporation, The Addison Independent, Ilsley Library, former Vermont governor Jim Douglas, makers, and members of The Makery steering committee. Update on The makery
A Publication of the Hannaford Career Center
In partnership with the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, the Career Center recently hosted a group of professionals from around the local health care industry at a first-ever event, The Conversation Cafe. By providing a space for practicing heath care workers to talk to our Medical Professions students, the Career Center once again bridged future employees with local employers. Not only were the practicing professionals able to give advice to the future professionals, but students also got important practice discussing their career goals and plans while broadening their own professional networks. We are grateful to the representatives from Middlebury Pediatric Dentistry, Addison County Home Health & Hospice, At Home Senior Care, Middlebury EMS, the Open Door Clinic, Wake Robin, and the UVM Health Network for joining us. This model is one that the Career Center is interested in pursuing with other programs and we hope to see more and more employers and practicing professionals interacting with our students through events like this one!

These students and their guests attend an awards breakfast in the Glass Onion to be honored for their work ethic, creativity, approach to problem-solving, effort and attitude, collaboration, and other aspects of academics and our center-wide Habits of Work. On May 2nd and 3rd, we held breakfasts to honor the 21 students nominated for the first quarter of the 2017-2018 school year. The Addison County Economic Development Corporation (ACEDC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce a $1000 contribution to help in the establishment of The Makery, and challenges others in the community to contribute to this innovative Addison County Maker Space. Maker Spaces encourage local innovation as well as collaboration and can also be a conduit for entrepreneurship. The vision of The Makery is “a place where people imagine, experiment, network, collaborate, and create for personal & professional growth”. The mission of The Makery is “to engage the greater community in pursuits related to occupations, hobbies, or crafts that grow the technical and creative economy of Vermont”. ACEDC is a founding partner in this effort to establish The Makery, to be located at the Hannaford Career Center. Hannaford Career Center previously held a very successful Maker Faire and surveyed the local business community which indicated strong support for this local maker space. ACEDC is represented on the Maker Space Steering Committee which is currently working on fundraising, including an effort to crowdfund $6,000. This seed amount must be raised to be eligible for consideration by the Gannett Foundation for a grant of between $25,000 and $100,000 for The Makery. To donate before the deadline of Friday, May 11, 2018, click HERE: https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/careercentervt. The Makery also secured a $30,000 grant from ACEDC member Middlebury College’s Fund for Innovation which will help support the organization with staffing from interns and mentors. ACEDC is the resource for navigating the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Addison County, VT. ACEDC works with businesses in all stages of growth, from pre-venture start-ups to established companies and global corporations, to help them create and retain good paying jobs. Since 1993, ACEDC has loaned nearly $4 million to dozens of local businesses, creating or retaining more than 1400 jobs in Addison County. ACEDC is an equal opportunity lender.
