Students today need to enter the world after high school as engaged and energized citizens, confident and ready to take flight and make a difference. The Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF) is working hard to help all Eudora students on their journey to do just that. The ESF’s mission is to raise funds to enrich the student experience, reward teacher excellence, and make our schools the very best. Through the generosity of our community, we have already been able to provide more than $50,000 in classroom enhancements and professional development for our students and teachers. My personal goal as ESF President is simple: I want to make this outstanding school district even better. Eudora is a very special place and the excellent schools play a huge role in the success of our community. I invite you to read this issue of our annual report to learn about a few of the projects we have been working on. They include 14 new enrichment programs at Eudora Middle School and you will also learn about the first ever ESF Principal for a Day Program held in the Spring of 2017, where community members were invited to learn about Eudora schools firsthand through the eyes of our students. I am excited for the future of Eudora schools and the role that the Foundation can play in it. On behalf of the ESF Board, I invite you to be a part of the 2017-2018 year. You can do this by contributing to the annual campaign, participating in our annual golf tournament, or by signing up to join this year's Principal for a Day Program. Please take some time and learn about the Foundation and our amazing Eudora schools. There are many ways to get involved besides those listed above, so please don’t hesitate to contact me to learn what you can do to help. Thank you for your loyal and continued support of the Eudora Schools Foundation.

“As a staff member, it was nice to see the students getting so involved in their investigations. At first, I wasn't sure the students were going to like conducting simple investigations, but I found kids wanting to keep conducting their investigations way past the time they were supposed to put away supplies.” – Kari Heide, 2nd Grade Teacher
These kits allow 2nd grade students the opportunity to perform high-quality experiments and observations utilizing materials scientists would use in a real lab setting.

The following pages highlight a few of the innovative programs and resources that have been funded through donations to the Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF). Donor support impacts student achievement, teacher excellence, and helps to make Eudora schools the very best. The ESF serves all of the district’s 1,700 students and 250 staff members, and is sustained by the community, individuals, businesses, alumni, parents, school employees, and others that contribute to the success of Eudora students. We invite you to read the stories on the following pages to see the wonderful impact you are making in Eudora schools.
Battle of the Books | Grant Recipient: 5th Grade Teachers
“ESF gave my students the opportunity to read, discuss, and embrace rich traditional literature. Students were able to experience literature discussions in a new way. They were excited to talk about the books, read the next set of pages, and become introduced to our new books. Reading came alive in our classroom!” – Heather Moore, 3rd Grade Teacher

Students work as teams throughout the school year to read as many books as they can. This competition helps students become independent readers and also provides a way to motivate students to read. The competition ends with a trivia-style battle at the end of the school year.
"Battle of the Books is a really good reading program that has been made great through the generosity of the Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF). We are very thankful to ESF for partnering with us to get kids to read independently!" - Kyle Stadalman, 5th Grade Teacher
Through this special ESF grant, EMS offers an enrichment program with 14 engaging before or after-school programs. Each one recognizes the need and importance of additional hands-on learning opportunities - particularly at this pivotal time in a middle school student's life. Programs range from First Aid to Computer Coding to a Book Club to Sport Statistics.

“The best thing we made using the Makey-Makey boards was the game controllers. We also learned that dry play-doh doesn't transmit energy. It was so fun to try. And fail. And try. And fail. And try. And SUCCEED! This experience taught perseverance and team work." – Betsy Lawrence, 6th Grade Science Teacher

“My students gained a much richer and deeper development of language than I could've provided otherwise… they have confidence in reading and listening, more confidence with speaking and writing, and they seemed to enjoy it enough so that many of them read ahead because they had to know what happened next!" – Melanie McQueen, EHS Spanish Teacher
“I'm so glad to have the enrichment program in place to offer programs to students that will benefit them now and in the years to come. So excited that half of the 7th grade has signed up.” – Danielle Young, EMS/EHS School Nurse

The Eudora Schools Foundation wanted to give local community and business leaders a-close-up view of a day in the life of a principal. Participants were assigned to one of the three district school buildings to spend the morning with principals in order to better understand their complex roles and to gain perspective on the school system from within. In turn, community leaders shared their expertise and provided perspective on their business’ needs and opportunities for collaboration. Kueffer started his morning at EES with principals Amy DeLaRosa and Seth Heide. He and the nine other guest principals assigned to that school learned about day-to-day operations, went on a tour of the school hosted by fifth grade students, and had the opportunity to talk with the principals, teachers, and students about successes and challenges in the school. “One of the moments that stands out the most was the meeting in the conference room with the administrators and having a question and answer session,” said Kueffer. “I was impressed how open they were and willing to answer any question… it showed their willingness to be vulnerable and share their challenges at the school with the public. I was especially impressed with the principals’ strong character, passion, and their desire to provide a quality education for our kids.” Meanwhile at Eudora Middle School, assistant principal Shannon Hayden was busy welcoming his ten guest principals and going over the agenda for the morning. “I wanted the guest principals to see how a regular Wednesday happens in our school. I wanted them to see how things have changed since they were in school, whether it was them learning about new technology, what the day-to-day schedule looks like, or for them to understand our state standards,” said Hayden. Each school created a unique morning itinerary for the guest principals, which often included meeting with students, talking with faculty, or participating in student activities or a special program. It also provided an opportunity for these community and business leaders to meet each other. “When we started off in the conference room it was cool that many of these community members met each other for the first time,” said Hayden. “As an administrator, I was impressed by the genuine interest and desire of our guest principals to take part in the day. They had a willingness to hear our needs and wanted to learn more.” The Foundation designed the Principal for a Day program as an opportunity to build stronger community relationships, learn from community leaders’ expertise and perspective, and expand collaboration that benefits our Eudora community as a whole. It was the first time this program has been offered with the plan of offering it to more community and business leaders each spring. “This opportunity was unique from my 10-years of experience in education. I have heard of kids serving as principals as a class reward, but never heard of community members as guest principals,” said Hayden. “It was fantastic to have these community members involved at the ground level and to experience what we do every day. I learned from them as well… it was well worth my time.”

OPPORTUNITIES
eing asked to come to the principal’s office was somewhat of a surprise for Eudora community member, Clint Kueffer. After all, Kueffer was a pretty good student when he attended school twenty years ago. Kueffer was raised in Douglas County and attended Baldwin Schools. After graduation from KU, he and his wife, Sarah, started their business, Integrity Midwest Insurance, and in 2003 he moved his family to Eudora. They currently have two children that attend Eudora Elementary School (EES). When the letter arrived inviting him to be one of the thirty guest principals participating in the Eudora Schools Foundation Principal for a Day program, Kueffer was willing. “It was pretty easy to say yes to the invitation. It was actually an honor to be invited,” said Kueffer. “I saw it as an opportunity to become more connected to the community. It was a great opportunity to meet school administrators and tour the buildings.”

The best learning doesn't occur in a vacuum -- it takes a community. This program is an excellent opportunity to build the bridges that engage community leaders in student learning and allow us to understand what our community needs from the schools we all invest in.

The morning concluded with the thirty guest principals meeting at the Eudora – De Soto Technical Education Center at Eudora High School for a luncheon hosted by Eudora superintendent, Steve Splichal. Participants had the opportunity to chat with each other and share what they learned from their experience at each school. “This event was beneficial to me as a business and community member and I would definitely encourage others to participate,” said Kueffer. “I think it is important to know where tax dollars are being spent and the accountability of our taxes and with what I saw… I couldn’t have been more delighted and impressed with what was happening in our Eudora Schools… extremely impressed.”

Mark and I moved to Eudora nine years ago for many reasons. We both grew up in small, tight-knit communities and wanted that for our family. We heard many great things about the schools in Eudora and how they provide many big school opportunities while keeping the small town feel. The Eudora Schools Foundation helps to give so many of those experiences and opportunities for all the students as well as the teachers and staff. We both strongly believe that contributing to the Foundation helps support them in their endeavors to give back to teachers and provide students with innovative learning experiences. Some years we have been able to give more than others but we have always made the decision to give, because we believe so strongly in the mission of the Eudora Schools Foundation.
