Discipling at the
V. 26—NO. 2 Apr-jun 2018
belong. believe. become
We all know that the road from "youth" to "young adult" is filled with twists and turns. Unfortunately, studies have shown (see hemorrhagingfaith.com) that if a young person's faith does not become grounded and engaged through this crossroads of life, way too often it is dumped at the side of the road. At CLBI we are discipling young people to be rooted in God's Word as they navigate the highs and lows of life. As we walk with students in their classes, worship times, mentoring relationships and ministry experiences, please pray that the Spirit of God will ignite in each one a deep, robust faith. As you read this issue of the Crossroads, look for the larger picture of how CLBI fits into God's global discipling movement - a movement that the gates of Hades will not overcome. Get ready church; the best is yet to come! Pastor Dean Rostad, CLBI President

CLBI - A Discipling Movement
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:21 I have good news for you: Christ died, Christ has risen and Christ will come again! Even with growing secularism around us, know that Jesus is the victor, and Jesus is building His church. As a follower of Jesus, it is a privilege to serve as President of CLBI. Be confident that God is at work shaping our students into strong disciples of Jesus in this place. Give me a call sometime and I will share over coffee how God is at work through the "belong, believe and become" of CLBI. To use a hiking metaphor (see picture above), CLBI's end goal is to glorify God through becoming a stronger discipling movement. To reach that goal three key markers need to be met. 1. Becoming Fully Funded 2. Embracing Key Networks 3. Multiplication Rather than being sequential goals, we are at work on all three areas at the same time. Financially, CLBI is on track. Many prayers went up this past fall as we faced a lower enrollment. Those prayers were answered. At CLBI's AGM in November, we embraced a "live within your means" budget, and if our donations continue to come in as they have this year, we will be able to break even at our year-end of June 2018. As of March 1st, we have received 81% of our donations. We are anticipating God to provide the $106,000 remaining to meet our budget. A goal has been set to raise our "Automatic Monthly Donations" to $10,000 a month ($120,000 a year). In July 2017 we were receiving $1205 per month. As of March 2018, we are receiving $2015 a month. If God is calling you to be part of this army of monthly supporters, contact the office or visit www.clbi.edu/give for more information. Embracing Key Networks - God is at work growing dynamic relationships with churches, ministries, and alumni. As we receive students and send back equipped disciplers, we will see increased health in these ministries. Please see the article on page 22 about our initiative to equip youth to serve alongside of our summer VBS team. Youth working alongside our CLBI team will be built up into more vibrant disciples and this will strengthen our relationship with churches. Multiplication - For 85 years CLBI has been discipling students. We are maturing our methods so that the way we disciple students will be more viewable, doable, and reproducible. In the next issue of the Crossroads, you will read about how we have approached some alumni to come back to live in our dorms. In exchange for helping out around the school, we will continue to disciple them in refining their leadership skills. God has been faithful to provide creative solutions to continue the high caliber discipleship for which CLBI is known. Enrollment is growing, but we anticipate that it will take a couple of years for enrollment to return to long-term average levels. Pray that God will send us young people to disciple and generous givers with one time and monthly gifts to sustain this ministry.

Movement
April 1 Jesus, today we ask that You pour out Your endless love for Jenya Rust (Food Services) as she celebrates her birthday. Surround her with the company of loving friends and family. May she know that her dedication to CLBI is a blessing to all who attend and work there. April 2 Lord God, as we celebrate her birthday today, bless Jodi Harrison (Director of Food Services) and affirm in her Your loving spirit and grace. Continue to walk with her in her journey of faith. We give You praise for the many talents You have blessed her with! April 3 Heavenly Father, grant that Your Holy Spirit will reveal itself as the IMPACT & Engage classes look at the Book of James. Be with Rev. Dean Rostad as he unpacks this holy epistle. May the students find pure joy in Your message to them this week. April 4 Father, we thank You for all the churches in Camrose. Grant them Your wisdom, truth, and discernment as they uplift their commun- ities and Your followers. Bless them in Your holy work of preaching the Gospel and the reality of Jesus Christ. April 5 Lord, we lift up to You those who struggle with doubt in their faith. Help those who wish to believe, but are burdened in their unbelief. Find those who are lost and pursue their hearts constantly. April 6 We thank You, God Almighty, for the many outreach and ministry opportunities at CLBI. Continue to work through trips such as Urban Hike or community engagements like Ministry Practicums to further Your Kingdom. Provide for students new or needed areas in which they can serve your Gospel. April 7 Heavenly King, we ask for a heart of evangelism. Whether it be in our own homes, our communities, or anywhere else in the world, help us to speak about Your son Jesus to others. Use us as agents of Your Word and of Your forgiveness. April 8 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20) April 9 Lord Jesus, be with the IMPACT & Engage students as they study “Discerning Personal Call.” Grant Rev. Nathan Hoff wisdom as he helps Your children to discern Your good and perfect will. Provide the students with clear direction for their own vocation and help them to know where they may use their talents for the glory of the Gospel. April 10 Today we pray for healing, Holy Spirit. Be with those who are facing physical afflictions, mental struggles, or emotional traumas. Send Your spirit of restoration to those who need it and bless those who work in supporting the well-being of others. April 11 Bless David Vold (Engage student), Almighty God, as he celebrates his birthday today. Continue to lead him in Your truth and nurture his spirit as a God-fearing young man. Walk with David and renew him as he continues to learn more about Your Word. April 12 Heavenly Father, we pray for Rev. Nathan Hoff as he leads tonight’s CLBIplus. Guide Your servant’s words as he talks about “Our need for Gospel Fluency.” Uplift Your people as they hear Your Word and listen to Your voice in the Good News. April 13 CLBI is blessed to have amazing volunteers. Jesus, pour out Your love and grace to everyone who donates their time to help the school be a place of growth and learning for our students. Thank You for their work and dedication in helping send forth Your light to this world. April 14 Dear Lord, we ask that You continue to be present in the Camrose community. Thank You for this city in which we can learn about and worship You, O Lord. Bless the citizens that make up our home, and guide them with living in ways that honor You. April 15 Be with the IMPACT students, Almighty God, as they embark on their Reflection Retreat. Help them to quiet their minds and spirits as they prepare for their discernment sessions. May they find clarity of Your will for them going forward through Your Word and through Your Son Jesus Christ. April 16 Jesus, please be with the Engage students as they study “Ethics in Light of Scripture”. Bless Philip Watts as he leads the class in wrestling with morals in today’s secular world. May Your truth be preached this week. April 17 We lift up to You the entire Church worldwide today, Heavenly Father. Strengthen and teach us Your ways, Living God. Help us walk the path of righteousness. Forgive us our trespasses and help us to forgive those who have trespassed against us. Work in us to be lights in this world so that we may give glory to You in Heaven. April 18 Lord, reveal Your Spirit today to the IMPACT students as they look back on their time at CLBI and work through discernment sessions in the next days. Uplift them as they wrestle through how they have grown, and where You are leading them next. April 19 Lord Jesus, we pray for any and all prospective students who are considering attending CLBI. Give them clarity in their decision to go to Bible School, and grant them joy in their devotion to study who You are. Lead all of these young men and women to the cross, dear Lord. Reveal Your Son to them through this school. April 20 Thank You Heavenly Father, for the CLBI Board of Trustees. Continue to give them wisdom and discernment as they contemplate how to better serve Your school. Inspire them with new ideas in how to reach those who are in need of the Gospel and encourage them as they give their time and energy. April 21 God, be with the students and staff as they attend the Year-end retreat. Provide time for them to reflect on their journey this past year. May they find rest in Your Spirit and revelation in Your goodness in this special time. April 22 “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them”(Hebrews 13: 7-9). April 23 Lord, we pray for all the post-secondary students who are currently finishing their last exams of the school year. Help them in their studies and relieve them of any stress or anxieties they may have. Affirm in them the value You have for all those You have died and risen for through Your Son, Jesus Christ. April 24 Thank You Jesus, for all of those on staff at CLBI. Bless all of the leaders and their families as they dedicate themselves to the education and growth of the next generation of believers. Work through them to share the good news of Jesus, and provide for them all of their needs to further Your Kingdom. April 25 Abba Father, we lift up to You the Persecuted Church. Be with those who suffer for the Gospel and grant strength and freedom to all of those who risk their lives for Your Kingdom. Comfort them and give them courage in times of tribulation and let their examples inspire us to live for You, Lord Jesus. April 26 Almighty God, we pray for CLBI alumni today. Thank You for all the work You have done in their lives since attending Bible school. Remind them of Your goodness in fond memories, moments of growing, and Your countless blessings through the years. May they continue to feel unified in the body of Christ, now and forever. April 27 Heavenly Father, we ask that You bless the CLBI students, staff, friends, and families as they celebrate a blessed year at the graduation banquet tonight. May they see Your goodness as they reflect on the memories created this past year. April 28 Jesus, be with the students as they attend their graduation today. Fill their hearts with joy as they go forth to send Your light and love to their homes, communities, and the world. Let their spirits not be heavy with saying farewells, but may they rejoice in the hope that their faith will keep them bound in fellowship forever. April 29 “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4: 8-11). April 30 God, we pray for our government leaders at all levels of society. Bless and keep those who work to bring glory to Your name and grant wisdom for those who may not know You. Give them discernment and compassion as they craft new laws and legislation so that their acts may better our communities. May 1 Almighty God, we thank You for Your continued provision for CLBI through faithful supporters, staff members, and instructors who value Your mandate to make disciples of all nations. May 2 As the year has drawn to a close we pray that all the students would transition well back into their homes. Father, surround them with Your love, care, and mercy which is new every morning as they adjust to life away from CLBI. May 3 Lord of the Sabbath, You have promised us rest in You. May the staff who have poured themselves into the students for a school year find that promised rest this summer as they prepare to disciple more students in the fall. May 4 Every good and perfect gift comes from You, Father of lights. Over the lean summer months surprise us with an outpouring of generosity to sustain the ministry of CLBI and to enable it to do new works of disciple-making. May 5 Almighty God, use CLBI to raise up in our day faithful disciples inspired by Your Spirit, whose voices give strength to Your Church, and who proclaim the reality of Your kingdom. May 6 Lord of Life, bless Reina Talen (2018 IMPACT Student) with the fullness of Your love for her as she celebrates her birthday today. May 7 Father, as Brianna Hennig (2018 Impact Student) celebrates her birthday may she be drawn ever closer to You as You lead her into Your perfect will. May 8 Jesus, You have reminded us that our struggle is against the spiritual forces of evil. We pray Your protection over the staff, their families, and the students of CLBI as they equip and are equipped to advance Your Kingdom. May 9 “Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples!”(Psalm 105:1) May 10 Lord Jesus, continue to use CLBI as a place to train followers of Christ to become servant leaders who love and serve You for the glory of Your name. May 11 Bless the office staff, Lord, as they quietly go about Your business. May Your light shine through them in all the interactions they have today. May 12 Lord of the Church, raise up greater connections between CLBI and individual congregations that each may see an increase in their ministry as they partner together in the Gospel. May 13 “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now”(Philippians 1:3-5). May 14 Heavenly Father, bless the board members of CLBI with wisdom that comes from You as they seek to make faithful decisions for CLBI. May 15 As plans are made for the upcoming school year, God, the source of all wisdom, provide Instructors who love and fear You and who faithfully proclaim Your Word of truth to the students. May 16 Lord, be with those who are considering CLBI for the fall. Give them an irresistible urge to come be in community with You and other students as a step toward growing into the person You have created them to be. May 17 “I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning” (Psalm 130:5-6). May 18 Gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on President Dean Rostad. Give him a faithful heart for You, his family, and the students and staff of CLBI; lead him to joyfully serve You in all he does. May 19 Pour out Your blessing, Lord, on Gamaliel Buki (2018 Impact Student) and Landon Jack (husband of staff member Amy) on their birthdays. May they continue to grow in knowledge and faith toward You. May 20 We pray with Jesus,“Holy Father, keep them in Your name, which You have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one” (John 17:11b). May 21 God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, pour out Your promised Holy Spirit on the staff and students of CLBI that they would be drawn to a closer relationship with Jesus. May 22 God I lift up to you all of the families and communities that will be impacted through CLBI’s travelling VBS ministry. Prepare hearts to be ready to receive the gospel. May 23 Gracious God, You have blessed CLBI with a wonderful facility in which to do ministry. May the buildings be filled with joy in Your presence and be a safe place for healing, growth, and for relationships to flourish. May 24 Almighty God, continue Your good work in the lives of the students from this past year. May they sense Your presence and Your call on their lives whatever the future may hold. May 25 Heavenly Father, may all of the students who will be serving at camps, VBS, or summer teams this summer make meaningful connections with the youth; make them witnesses to lives transformed by the Gospel. May 26 Lord, thank You for faithful volunteers who give sacrificially of their time and talents to be a blessing to CLBI. May their dedicated service yield an increase for Your kingdom! May 27 Loving God, You know the blessing Florian Schwaiger (Residence Life Director) is to the students. On this, his birthday, fill Him with Your Holy Spirit to continue to serve CLBI and its students with joy and passion. May 28 “O God, do not keep silence; do not hold Your peace or be still, O God”(Psalm 83:1). May 29 Lord God, thank You for the alumni of CLBI. May they continue to hear and obey Your call to ministry in all areas of their lives, especially as they faithfully support the work of this school. May 30 As summer approaches, we pray Holy Spirit, that You would be drawing students to CLBI for the fall. Give all students deciding where to go to school faithful hearts to boldly follow Your call in their lives. May 31 Creator God, You have formed Mackenzie Wahl (2018 Engage student) in Your image. Today, as he celebrates his birthday, remind him of his value in Your eyes and equip him to serve You. June 1 Yahweh Yir’eh (The Lord Will Provide), we thank You for supplying everything we need, and we ask that You would provide us with the funds necessary to replace the boilers this summer while the students are away. We thank You in advance for how You will meet this need and we thank You for the people that will be a part of it. June 2 Lord God, we ask that You bless all of the CLBI staff with a time of refreshment and renewal as they plan and take their holidays this summer! Keep them safe and healthy and let them return rested and ready for the challenges and opportunities of the next school year. June 3 “But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together” (Isaiah 50:7, 8a). June 4 Thank you God, our Provider, for all of the people that You have raised up to give sacrificially of their time and talents to bless and sustain the work of CLBI through their financial gifts, and through their faithful prayers! Bless them. June 5 Heavenly Father, we pray for the workers on campus during the summer. We ask that You guide them in their jobs and keep them safe as they work to make CLBI a ministry that brings You glory and honor, and that is a blessing to others. June 6 Almighty God, we ask that You bring people to CLBI to rent the facility. We ask for people to be able to use the buildings for Your purpose during the months that it sits empty; that they find a safe place to worship You and a time of rest and rejuvenation. June 7 Abba Father, we thank You that Camrose is a city with many churches, and we pray that You bless the local pastors in their work as they shepherd Your flock. May they know Your peace and wisdom as they prepare sermons and minister to their church families. June 8 Heavenly King, we pray today for all of the locations that the 2018 IMPACT teams were sent to. We ask that You bless the host locations as the missions there continue to share Your love and peace to those around them. Thank You for giving the students the opportunity to reach into new communities and to learn from them as they served You. June 9 Christ Jesus, we thank You for the students who have graduated from CLBI over the years. We ask that You bless the alumni as they work to further Your Kingdom in whatever direction Your calling has taken them. Thank You for blessing them with their time at CLBI and continue to work through them as they serve You. June 10 “Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land” (Psalm 85:8 & 9). June 11 Holy God, we pray for the VBS programs being hosted by different churches around Camrose this summer and we ask that You would reach out and touch the lives of the children and leaders involved. We also thank You that we live in a country where we are free to get together to worship You and share Your love with those around us. June 12 Heavenly Father, thank You for the ministry of the Christian summer camps,.We ask that You bless all of the staff and volunteers at the camps and that You keep them strong and healthy as they work to bring the knowledge of Your Son’s sacrifice to thousands of kids this summer. Please bless the children attending with open hearts and minds and make them ready to hear and respond to Your Holy Spirit June 13 Lord God, we ask You to bring us the instructors that You would have come to CLBI during this next school year. You have greatly blessed us in the past with amazing educators with hearts for You. We pray that You continue to gift us with leaders to guide our students to the paths You have for them. June 14 Creator God, we thank You for the blessings of love and marriage. Today we remember the wedding anniversary of Program Director Jeremy Osterwalder and his beloved wife Heidi. We pray Your special blessing on them as they celebrate their anniversary. June 15 Holy Spirit, we pray that You will bless both Lukas Schwaiger (Residence Life Directors’ Florian and Katherine’s son) and Discipleship Group leader Chris Vandermeer as they celebrate their birthdays today. Give them a fresh understanding and assurance of Your love for them as they enjoy this time with their families and friends. June 16 Abba Father, we thank and praise You for Your gracious provision of our President, Pastor Dean Rostad. We thank You for his love and work for CLBI and we ask that You would continue to provide him with Your vision for our future. Strengthen and encourage him and his family. June 17 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (1Cor. 12:9-11). June 18 Thank You, Jesus our Saviour, for Your provision of forgiveness and salvation for us. Your free gift we can never repay or fully understand but we thank and praise You for it nonetheless. June 19 Lord God, we pray that Your Holy Spirit would fall upon the Summer Team as they begin their training next week. Go ahead of them and prepare the hearts of the people that they will meet and minister to; bless them in their work and meet their every need. June 20 Wonderful Counsellor, we ask You to guide and lead those who are considering an internship with CLBI next year. Make their paths straight and show them their next step. June 21 Merciful God, continue to lead and guide the staff as they prepare for next year. Give them a clear vision and understanding of Your plans for CLBI. June 22 Lord God, we thank You for the faithful, sacrificial service of Residence Life Directors Florian and Katherine Schwaiger and their son Lukas. Be with them, bless, and keep them in Your loving care as they serve You in Camrose, far from their families. June 23 Heavenly Father, we ask that you bless those who are working on various projects around the CLBI campus this summer. We thank you for their willingness to devote their time and energy. June 24 Father God, we pray a special blessing on Discipleship group leader Heidi Osterwalder (Program Director Jeremy Osterwalder’s wife) as she celebrates her birthday today. Bless her and keep her securely in the palm of Your hand as You strengthen and encourage her through the coming year. June 25 Abba Father, we thank You for 2018 IMPACT student Karilyn Bartel, and we ask You to richly bless her on her birthday. May she feel Your loving presence and blessing in a special way today, and may she continue to lean on You as she looks ahead to this next year. June 26 Lord, You have placed us into families for our protection, nurture, and growth. Thank You for our families, and we ask that You will provide us with the opportunity to reconnect during this summer as we remember Your unfailing goodness to us. June 27 Dear God, You have blessed many CLBI students over the years with sponsorships. We ask You to bless those who contribute annually, making it possible for many to afford to attend the school. We thank You for those who contribute financially to sponsorships and pray for Your peace and love to surround them this summer. June 28 Lord God, we pray for the CLBI Alumni serving overseas and at different missions around the world. Bless them with Your Spirit as they labour for You so far from their homes and loved ones. Bring them love and joy in what they do so that they may be strong and courageous in their efforts to show others Your Son. June 29 Mighty King, Everlasting Father, we ask You to bless and prosper the church plant, The River, in Red Deer that former President, Pastor Harold Rust, and wife Joyce are working to establish together with CLBI alumni. Stir up and draw together the people that You would have become part of that gathering of believers. June 30 Holy Spirit, we ask You to be going ahead and preparing the hearts of those students who You are calling to come to CLBI this fall. Lead, guide, encourage, and provide for them in unexpected and unmistakable ways, that they may have full confidence in their decision to come away; to make time and seize this opportunity to deepen their relationship and reliance on You!
The path was a steady uphill climb. On and on we pushed, forest trail giving way to scree slopes and still our path was unrelentingly up. Breathing hard, my wife wondered if the time and effort to make the ascent was worth it “Maybe we should have just gone for coffee,” she muttered. Later, while sitting on the rocky outcropping high above the twisting road and rugged forest below, taking in the view, she broke the reverent silence with this statement: “Sometimes you just need to get above your life.” During a mini-getaway to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary last summer, Heidi and I decided to spend an afternoon hiking in the Cline River area of the Rocky Mountains. It was a blissful way to gain distance from everyday routines, packed schedules and the various demands that tug us in many directions. The walk along the ridge at the top of Vision Quest gave us opportunity to behold the beauty of Abraham Lake far below with its spectacular aqua hue. It was breathtaking. When you are able to see the landscape from a high perspective, you can’t help but recognize that in the big picture, we are small and God is very big. Big enough to manage our problems and direct our lives. ‘Getting above your life’ is an appropriate way to describe our efforts at CLBI as we work to disciple students. In a literal sense, when we take students beyond their comfortable lives onto new heights, we can make an introduction to vistas such as the one described. A mountain summit is a place where most have not been. Experiencing the physical reward of climbing upward to gaze upon the beauty below is foreign to many. There is opportunity in places such as God’s wilderness cathedral to gain a perspective that puts humanity in its place. It is in these sacred places next to the majestic mountains that we have the chance to appropriately realize our smallness as we stand before our Creator, our God. Beyond the physical, our program is designed to bring spiritual perspective and greater objectivity about our lives and our dependence on the Almighty. It is a healthful practice to get above our lives in order to recalibrate and ensure our mindset is indeed focused on God’s intention for our lives in Christ. There is no better time than in early adult life to rise out of the cultural pressures and the voices that so convincingly speak counter-biblical messages. Working to give opportunities for a Holy Spirit-inspired perspective on the purpose of life and the truth about God, self, and others is a significant part of what we do as we disciple students. Romans 12:2 compels us: “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (NLT). At the outset of adult life, and as it was for us, at key milestones in life, it is so valuable to make the effort, set aside the time, and do the sweaty work to get above your life. In the coming months, may you have the opportunity to get above your life in some way to identify life’s confusions for what they are, to recognize God’s faithfulness, and to be renewed in body, mind and soul as you go forward.
GET ABOVE YOUR LIFE
Jeremy Osterwalder, CLBI Program Director
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Darcy ('03-'05) and Laura Albers
Tell a story/share a memory of CLBI that you'll never forget. There are so many cherished memories of my time at CLBI that I can’t single one out. Encountering God and His creation through the outdoor trips opened my eyes to the natural world in which we live in. Being challenged through outreach to the urban poor, a First Nations community in the north, and a trip to Mexico opened my eyes to the human world in which we live. I think what I treasure most is the community of faith I encountered in fellow students. To see God living and working in other people as flawed and fickle as myself opened my eyes to the power of the gospel to change lives and hearts. As much as I received from the program itself, I think the from-the-heart open sharing of lives was where I learned the most, both about God and about my neighbor. I am so grateful to have shared in the lives and journeys of those with which I shared my time at CLBI. “How monotonously alike all the great tyrants and conquerors have been; how gloriously different are the saints.”- C.S. Lewis In what ways are you currently serving in God's mission? Currently I am in seminary at Concordia in Edmonton working toward an M.Div. Near the end of a five year missionary career with WMPL in Pakistan, I felt the call to return for more pastoral training and ordination in order to be equipped to be the best servant for Christ that I can be. I also help out at Bardo Lutheran Church in Tofield teaching at a Saturday night service. In what ways did the time you spent at Bible school help prepare you for where God has you now? I find a great deal of humor in reflecting on the fact that the traffic in Camrose used to keep me up at night. That’s what happens when you come straight from the family farm! From there God has brought me to sleeping underneath the stars in the Rockies at Wilderness Ranch Bible Camp, to sleeping through the Islamic call to prayer in a crowded Pakistani city to balancing time for sleep with time to study for seminary exams. CLBI helped prepare me for each of these settings through its emphasis on the grace of God found in the saving power of the cross of Christ. It’s what is needed for the young adults of today, for the unreached of the world, and for me still.

Transformation Needed
Through the gospel, Jesus takes tired, worn out sinners and transforms them to be alive with hope and purpose. He picks up our dead souls that are ready for the trash heap and pours into them His righteousness. Praise God for the risen Christ. At CLBI we see this transforming work in those we are discipling as well as in those doing the discipling. A key member of the CLBI team which is often forgotten is our facility itself. Praise God that the city of Camrose donated a ½ block of property in 1935 to become the setting for CLBI. In recent years, many upgrades have been made to the campus. This summer we have two projects that are in need of renewal: our boilers and the bathroom on the top floor of the Vinge Centre (guy's dorm). The boilers which provide heat to both of our dorms have unfortunately experienced early decay and need to be replaced. The cause of the early decay has been determined, and a long-term solution is ready to go. Last summer the 3rd floor bathroom in Pearson Hall (girl's dorm) was renovated beautifully. The girls are extremely thankful for this improvement. Now it is time for the cramped and tired guys bathroom to experience this same make-over. This bathroom renovation is part of a larger vision to transform the CLBI facility into an appealing destination for summer rental groups. With lower enrollment this past year we have not budgeted for these expenses. To complete both of these projects $75,000 is needed. Please pray about giving a special gift to make these projects a reality. To give towards these projects earmark your donations for "renovations." Tell a story/share a memory of CLBI that you'll never forget. Darby: One evening during a community CLBI worship event led by Marty Nystrom, I had a prophetic word spoken over me that I would one day be a father to the fatherless. I was very skeptical about this word although it was undeniably direct. The speaker could not have known that I was in the midst of dealing with a gaping “father wound.” God’s personal word to me through Marty really began the healing process of past hurts that had come about by growing up in the foster care system. Only through time did I realize the fullness of this prophetic word as God led us to grow our family in a unique and beautiful way. My time at CLBI helped me embrace the role of my Heavenly Father in my life: a good, good Father. Bryana: Discipleship Group on Wednesday evenings was a huge highlight for me.This became a little family away from home. I remember our d-group leaders planning a fun night one spring evening and we had a rubber duck race down the flooded creek at Jubilee Park. One of the ducks got stuck and couldn’t be reached but we were not going to leave it abandoned. We headed back to the school, grabbed a canoe and went on a rescue mission. Fun memories! Through relationship with my D-group leader/mentor, I was able to have regular coffee dates or go for walks to process the learning and development happening in my life. This was a huge blessing. I began to learn about more authentic relationships and was modelled such amazing listening skills and how to come alongside people in the efforts of discipleship. In what ways are you currently serving in God's mission? Darby: I am currently a teacher at a Catholic high school where I get to teach Religious Studies and daily have opportunity to engage young people with the gospel message. I am also coaching the Sr. Boys basketball team. My coaching philosophy is not to just make them better players, but to help them to know the One who made them. A large part of my life also includes being a husband and father, raising our five sons to know and love God. I just recently joined the CLBI Board of Trustees. Bryana: I spend most of my time and energy on the home front, homeschooling (more than a full time job) in addition to the many tasks of parenting and running our home. In what ways did the time you spent at Bible school help prepare you for where God has you now? Darby: CLBI gave me the foundation of faith that was needed in order to go through the trials of life. God was able to not only direct me to a spouse who would support and love me, but also into a life full of adventure and ministry with young people. I can honestly say that without CLBI my life would have gone on a completely different path. Bryana: My time at CLBI helped me to grow in my faith and become more confident in who God made me to be. I remember seeing a new depth in relationships at CLBI that I hadn’t experienced with my friends before CLBI. This new deeper level of connection, authenticity and prayer over everything has made me seek this out in every relationship since. The desire to be real and to dive into the tough stuff with people in my sphere of influence has impacted my parenting, marriage and relationships with others.

An Awkward Conversation?
We understand that most people don’t want to think or talk about wills, estate plans and end of life decisions. It can be hard, uncomfortable and frankly a little awkward. But, if we don’t have those conversations with ourselves, our parents or our family – who will? When you don’t have a will or plan in place, someone else will make the decisions for you and they may not reflect your faith, your values or your ideas. Because of your faithful partnership with CLBI, we would like to offer you an opportunity that may be of value as you reflect and make decisions about your estate and will. We invite you to join an Estate and Will Planning phone seminar hosted by our partner ADVISORS with Purpose. I believe this will be beneficial and enriching. You will receive estate and Will planning information to help you understand the critical issue of providing for your family, reducing your tax burden, and how you can continue supporting ministries of your choice. This is not a fund-raising call, and no appeal will be made to support CLBI. This is simply to provide helpful information since many people are interested in knowing what to do when faced with estate planning challenges. An estate planning specialist will also be available to talk with you personally and privately after the call regarding any specific questions you may have. Please know that ADVISORS with Purpose does not sell any product; they are only interested in serving you and the Kingdom. To join the call please contact ADVISORS with Purpose directly at: register@advisorswithpurpose.ca or phone at 1-866-336-3315 and include your name, phone number, email and date of the call. The following dates are available for calls: April 24, May 22, June 26, Sept 25, Oct 30, Nov 27. All calls are at 1pm MST

I suspect you’ve heard the reports about the shrinking nature of the church in North America, and you very well may see it happening from where you sit on Sunday mornings. Increasing numbers of North Americans are simply saying “no” to church. In particular, more and more of today’s young people claim no religious affiliation whatsoever. The percentages are startling, to be sure, and many find themselves wondering, “will the church survive?” Christian leaders quite appropriately view this exodus of young people with alarm, and wonder how we have failed and how we can do better. I find myself wondering what this means for our next generation of missionaries. Let me share with you something that may surprise you: I’m encouraged! Indeed, I’m excited for the future of Christian mission and our role in it. I was recently blessed to teach at Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute. I found an enthusiastic community of young believers who were more mindful of modern developments than we are, who know themselves to be a counter-cultural minority, and who are eager to take on the challenging task of being Christ’s witnesses in a post-Christendom world where they face opposition unlike anything North American Christians have faced before. I became convinced that as God reveals his grace and calling to them, they will become a “lean and mean” missionary force. They may not be many in number, but they will be well prepared to follow their Lord’s call to the nations. “The more, the better,” we sometimes say. Quite often that’s true, and sometimes we’re inclined to think the same in mission work. After all, didn’t Jesus tell his disciples that “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” “Pray therefore,” he said, “that the Lord would send out laborers…” (Matthew 9:37,38). Believe me, I’m all for having more missionaries, particularly those called to Gospel frontiers, but as we’re praying for the “new” let us also pray for the “few.” I find it interesting that Jesus didn’t direct us to ask the Lord to send out more laborers, but only to “send out laborers.” He gets to decide how many. In our North American context God may be choosing to call and send out the “few” who are the notable minority from this new generation. These few are the “lean and mean” of our future missionary force. They are accustomed to facing opposition, and, as some have shared with me, they are even thankful for that opposition which has helped refine their faith and sense of calling. They understand their shared identity in Christ to be more about community and movement than institution. They are inspired to find that they have things in common with the 1st century Christians in the Book of Acts. At the same time, they are gifted with abilities and sensitivities that equip them uniquely for mission in the 21st century. They are technologically adept. They are more accustomed to intercultural engagement than previous generations. They are ready to risk. They are ready for the new adventure that God is writing into his story for the world and his mission in it. If you doubt me about seeing strength in smaller numbers, consider how God chose to work for and through Gideon when he faced the massive Midianite army in the Valley of Jezreel. You may very well know the story as it’s found in chapters 7 and 8 of Judges. God reduced Gideon’s forces from 22,000 soldiers to a mere 300! Even after Gideon cut his army to 10,000, God told him, “there are still too many men… I will sift them for you.” After his unique “sifting” was over, God said, “with these 300 men I will rescue you and give you victory.” I ask myself: “As the number of church-goers diminishes in North America, is the Lord of Hosts and Harvests doing some “sifting?” Is he raising up from this generation a “lean and mean” missionary force uniquely sized and prepared to follow his Spirit’s lead? God’s promises, along with the history of his global mission, tell me that it must be so. Please pray for the “lean and mean” of this generation with whom God wants us to engage. Pray that he will “sift” them out and point them toward the nations. And pray that HE will transform us in the Prayer League for our role in calling, equipping and sending them.

Impact Update
As you read this, the IMPACT students will have been home for several weeks already, continuing to process and discern how God is calling them to respond to their IMPACT experiences. However, as I write this, the students are halfway through their month-long trips. The following is a glimpse of life from the field - a collage of the challenges, joys, unknowns, excitements, and adventures that they are living: “We are staying with amazing host families who have warmly welcomed us and blessed us greatly with their hospitality. We have made friends at Heart to Heart who have helped us orient ourselves within a foreign environment. Overall, we are tired, excited, sometimes overwhelmed and greatly blessed.” - Gillian, Kenya "My main duties have been washing dishes and preparing meals, on the floor visiting with people and getting to know their stories” - John, Edmonton “I am struggling with the 15 year old girl that I have been taking care of. I have been praying that God would help me view this girl as He views her...God is present here even though some moments are harder than others...God has given me small blessings that have helped me through each day.” - Linaya, East Asia “Our first earthquake experience... craziest feeling having the ground and everything that should be stable shaking uncontrollably….The strong Christian community in Roca Blanca and Puerto Escondido has come together, united even stronger, in times of uncertainty.” - Brianna, Oaxaca “We've been given more responsibilities to lead activities with the kids as a whole. It's been a lot of action in movement (chaos as I like to call it) and we've been blessed by their energy and at times it's been draining...To God be the Glory.” - Gamaliel, Quebec
Tell a story/share a memory of CLBI that you'll never forget. In the two years I attended CLBI, there were countless memories, laughs, trials, tears, hardships, friendships, and an abundance of love. I do not know if I will ever forget my experience at CLBI; there are not too many places like it. For this California girl, it was a lot of adjusting. My first night at CLBI highlights some of the learning in which I would engage; due to my lack of attention to detail I had forgotten bedding and I was still waiting on supplies I'd sent from home. However, I had received a thin blanket (that my roommate considered a scarf) earlier that day from the airline, I thought that would suffice; WRONG! It was so cold that I had to get up in the middle of the night to put on a jacket. That night I slept in jeans and a t-shirt (AWFUL idea that CLBI would later correct), In the morning my roommate Hannah made mention of my rough night and sheepishly said “I have extra blankets. I guess I should’ve mentioned that.” We laugh about it now, but at the time I could not believe she had watched me get up to put on my jacket but felt too shy to offer me a blanket. It was more than just adjusting to the weather, it was adjusting to a small town, to different food, to different hobbies, and to a new place and new people. These adjustments are memories I will not forget. Another thing that I will not forget is the atmosphere/community that CLBI creates. From Discipleship group, to outdoor adventures, to dorm devotions, to one-on-ones with women that have invested in me as if I were a daughter, God has used each and every experience. Coming in as a foreigner can be quite challenging and for so much of my life I had found myself on the outside; but putting myself into the CLBI community was worth the risk to respond to God’s call. Out of it came many late nights filled with laughter, dancing, stories, depth, and occasional rebuke from those that actually wanted to sleep on my floor. Out of the experiences came friendships deeper than I could’ve ever imagined. Out of it came truth and answers. Out of it came critique and weakness but by the grace of God it was redeemed to growth and openness. Out of it came healing and many songs inspired by my experiences. Out of it came a California girl willing to be sent wherever the Lord should lead her. In what ways are you currently serving in God’s mission? I am currently back at home serving at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church until April. I am involved in a couple different things I am passionate about, such as hanging out with youth, teaching kids and leading Bible studies. I teach Sunday school to kids from grade 1-5 and help out with youth group alongside other members of our church. I have joined forces with a mentor, Linda, to lead a small group of young women. I am extremely excited about this opportunity to lead worship and help plan the weekly study of the Word. I am also preparing to leave in April to serve with World Mission Prayer League for a year. While overseas I will be teaching in a manner reminiscent of homeschooling. If you want more specifics, please let me know. I would be glad to elaborate on details with you in person. In what ways did the time you spent at Bible school help prepare you for where God has you now? My time at Bible School has helped prepare me in many ways. What I gleaned from my time at CLBI has overflowed into many facets of my post-CLBI life. Bible School has helped me know the Word, develop valuable leadership skills and gain much confidence to implement these skills. Living in community has helped me understand more about the needs of others around me and how to help meet those needs. Practically, CLBI has equipped me to transfer all that I have learned and apply it to my day to day life. Conflict resolution is one of those skills which I am sure I will need to use in the months and years ahead. Now that I have been immersed in community and Bible school I have gained a greater understanding of myself and how God created me, and it has made me passionate about God’s work and His Word. I have learned my strengths and weaknesses and how I impact others in both positive and negative ways. This learning has come about through many hardships and honest talks. God has been steadfast in all of this and has pushed me to grow through my experiences in order that I may be equipped for things far beyond my imagination. Bible school has equipped me to love more and surrender all for the One who loves without end.

Summer on Mission
The making of a movement - In 1932, at the beginnings of the Great Depression, God lit a flame in the hearts of many through the creation of CLBI. The founders of this school sought for every student to: 1. Know Jesus 2. Love God’s church 3. Be inspired and equipped to serve wherever God leads** This mandate has not changed today - We want to see all of the young adults CLBI is discipling to experience these aims. Currently, students need to graduate from high school before CLBI focuses its energy on equipping them to follow Christ. We cannot wait that long to pour into young people. In my years of working with teens I have concluded that if hearts are not moving in God's direction by age 16, it gets more unlikely as they get older. They indeed are at a crossroads of life in those high school years. This summer CLBI is equipping high school students for ministry by inviting teens to volunteer alongside CLBI's Summer VBS team. The title for this new initiative is “Summer of Mission”. Personally, when I was a teen, my faith in Christ grew dramatically because leaders mentored me at Bible Camp (many of whom were CLBI alumni). Through assisting with Bible studies, cabin devotions, and campfires, I was inspired to love and serve Jesus in a way that changed the trajectory of my life. A CLBI board member shared with me how she planned from early on that all her kids would attend CLBI. I resonate with a quote she shared with me: "I want to spend eternity with my kids." I agree with her thinking. The more she encouraged strong spiritual exper- iences for her children, the higher probability of them sticking with the faith. By involving high school students in our VBS summer teams we will also give them greater exposure to the benefits of Bible School. Pray that through this Summer of Mission program, the Spirit will invigorate the faith of teenagers to bring many to faith in Christ. The Summer of Mission is open to teens who have completed grade 9 and older. How to get involved: 1. Visit www.clbi.edu/summer to register.. 2. Attend CLBI’s training weekend June 1-3, 2018. This includes some fun time at Camrose's Jaywalkers Jamboree. If this weekend doesn’t work for you, please contact us. 3. Select different weeks you would like to serve with CLBI’s summer team. Teens can serve for just one week or for several weeks.. In 1932 the Great Depression was just beginning. There were few jobs to be found, crops were failing, but the Spirit of God was moving. Today, the Spirit of God is moving and raising up the next generation of leaders to renew the church in its global task of making disciples. Wow, what exciting times we are living in! **CLBI's first Dean (President), Pastor Paul C. Nyholm, communicated this three-point mandate for CLBI in 1934. "The first and fundamental thing is to get into a saving fellowship with Jesus Christ. The next is to come to learn and love the Christian Church (read Ephesians) in the light of the Lutheran Reformation (read Romans). The third is to receive such information and inspiration which will lead to faithful and humble service in whatever corner God will put one to follow in the footsteps of the meek and humble Master Himself and carry on as torchbearers after those who “burned and bled and died” for the new pioneers who brought with them across the ocean a precious spiritual heritage." Lynn Gergens - CLBI Guest Instructor
Hi - my name is Lynn Gergens and I am currently on disability. I worked the past 20 years in the church as a youth and family minister; before that I worked for myself helping churches that were too small to have second workers. For 10 years prior to that I worked at Concordia University College ending my time there as the Dean of Admissions. It occurred to me at some point in my 20’s that I might outlive the church body that I grew up in and have served all of my life. Since then I have experienced all kinds of different emotions as I thought about that. In my 20’s I thought about the church ‘dying' with much trepidation and fear. As I’ve grown older I have come to understand the nature of God more and no longer think of the ‘death’ of the church. The church is God’s and as it says in Matthew 16 "the gates of hell will not prevail against it". As I have understood how very much God loves us and how much He extends grace to us, I have come to be excited about what God will do in the church. God has proven to me in my lifetime that He loves His church and the people in it more than any of us can imagine. God has great things in store for His church. I don’t know what they are but I know that God is all creative; all powerful and all loving. The church couldn’t be in a more hopeful spot; because the church is the bride of Christ in His care until He returns. If we look at the world around us it is tempting to be dismayed, perhaps discouraged. Hopefully that will lead us all to pray together to see what plans God has in store - and to pursue those plans without wavering. "…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:23-24. ESV). I believe that the kind of disciples that will be most effective in the future are disciples who are rooted in God’s love and humbled by the knowledge that He trusts us to do His work. An effective disciple will cling to the three promises spelled out in numerous verses including the verse above - to believe that grace is a gift that Christ alone can give that we receive in faith knowing the Bible holds all the truths we need to follow God’s paths. As we hold these things dear and come together as the community He intends us to be and pray, then I believe that as He has promised, He will lead us together in the direction we should go. Jesus is calling me to find my hope in Him in some ways that I had not anticipated these days - which should not surprise me since God always seems to be calling me in unexpected ways. As I mentioned in my first sentence I am currently on disability as I have been unable to resume work duties due to chronic pain. It seems like just a few years ago I was only 18 and 60 looked ancient, At 55 years of age I was looking forward to retirement and perhaps some extra time to do special projects and some more mission trips. But in the past year my mental journey has had to make some shifts. I don’t know what the future holds - and I’m more aware of not-knowing as I try to make decisions about how I will still endeavour to be in ministry with the gifts and abilities that God still calls me to use. This doesn’t look like anything I’ve planned, but whenever I even think of that path I am brought up short. I have lived an amazing life and God has blessed me with so much more than I ever asked or imagined. Yes there have been some disappointments but nothing compared to the infinite joy of knowing how very much God loves me. There have been some unfulfilled dreams but more than anything there have been dreams that God made into bigger-than-I-ever-guessed realities as He blessed me over and over again. So I’m not sure what the future holds but I’m not at all worried about it. My future is in God’s hands.

Arnold & Ruth Hagen
Open Classes
On February 25, 2018, Jesus took Ruth Hagen home just as he had guided Arnold (President of CLBI 1962 - 1986) home in 2014. The legacy these two have left behind will never be forgotten. Cultivating beauty in God's creation and working to create a place of grace were some of the efforts Ruth Hagen put herself into alongside former CLBI President, Rev. Dr. Hagen. "A memory that I have of my grandma that sticks out was her love of gardening and growing things. I remember she and Grandpa coming out to Birch Hills, Saskatchewan (where I was born and raised) and we planted a package of morning glory flower seeds alongside our house. We placed a trellis there where the flowers grew up and bloomed. Whenever I see a morning glory flower I think of her." -Mark Hagen (CLBI Director of Admissions and Worship) "My grandma was a wonderful hostess, whether her guests were adults or children. She always had gingerbread cookies in her cookie jar for us, as well as homemade juice made from fruit from her garden. Everything was served methodically and carefully, with a napkin, and she never complained about our spills and crumbs." -Heidi Osterwalder (CLBI D-Group Leader)

we vs them
belong. believe. become.
Each November we send our students out into the downtown cores of Saskatoon, Calgary, and Edmonton. Our hope in this experience is to help breakdown the barriers of “we” vs. “them” as we serve the homeless and marginalized populations. This year we sent a film crew along to document this annual trip. Go to www.clbi.edu/media to see this latest CLBI video.
