Enhancing Math Instruction for the Struggling Learner Grades 6-9 Math Teachers (for teams of regular & special education teachers) This three part series is offered through BAISD. This session is co-facilitated by two people with math expertise and two people with special education expertise, taught to mixed audiences of general math and special education educators Dates: February 11, March 1, & March 14, 2019
Tape Diagrams and Singapore Bar Graphs A comprehensive look at how simple tape Diagrams from first grade can be used and expanded effectively through 9th grade. Based on the Singapore Math Bar Graphs, this instructional method offers a much needed break from the rote learning taking place in many classrooms.
SAT/PSAT Results that Inform Instruction This half day session will have teachers analyze the district’s results in the recent SAT and PSAT suite of assessments. The discoveries and trends observed there will then become part of their instruction as they look to build understanding by digging into the structure behind the problems.
Miscellaneous Topics Ranging from effective warm-up resources to NCTM’s series ‘Taking Action’ to Eureka Math to Add+Vantage Math Recovery (AVMR), many topics can be customized to fit your district’s needs. Also, if there are individuals you know of that you might want us to sponsor, that can be arranged.
Numeracy and Fluency Based on the work by Chris Cain and Valerie Faulkner, teachers will look at the essential elements of effective teaching using the most current research on math instruction and the importance language plays in that role. This hands-on session will look into the importance of developing fluency within grades K-8, which is one of the best practices in mathematics.
Individual Math Coaching For the past three years individual districts have utilized coaching as a method to assist new (and experienced) teachers in their reflection on instruction and strategies to enhance their instruction by including all range of learners.

GLB Regional Literacy Leaders K-12 September 13, 2018 November 8, 2018 February 7, 2019 March 14, 2019
Number Talks Based on the work and research of Sherry Parrish along with Ruth Parker and Cathy Humphreys, two half-day sessions for grades K-5 or 4-10 can be customized for your needs. Teachers will work collaboratively to discover the power behind this tool that helps students with computational fluency.
K-3 Literacy Essential Practices August 12-13, 2019 Spend two-days digging into the K-3 Essentials. Participants will review the data collected from the BAISD Literacy Rounds Process and focus on areas of need. Using the training and research from Dr. Nell Duke, University of Michigan, Dr. Tanya Wright, Michigan State University and Laura Tortorelli, Michigan State University, teachers will come out with a clear understanding of the essentials and how to improve classroom practice for more effective literacy instruction.

10 Instructional Shifts in Making Math Accessible for all Through the work of Steven Leinwand, teachers will discover the important instructional shifts occurring in the Michigan Math Curriculum (MMC). These six topics include Focus, Coherence, Fluency, Deep Understanding (Structure), Relevant Tasks and Dual Intensity (practice and application).
Math Intervention Opportunities Programs such as Delta Math, Algebra Nation and Imagine Learning are Intervention programs available to districts for free or at a minimal cost.
Importance of Tasks in Mathematics Instruction Instructors will look at different ways tasks can be implemented into their instruction, whether introduction, formative assessment or as a main curriculum. We will address. three best practices in mathematics – Multiple solutions, Argumentation and Application and how they can best be used in the classroom. Some of this will based on the work “Building Thinking Classrooms” by Peter Liljedahl.

Bay-Arenac ISD consultants are available to come on site and provide services to all LEA staff. Each lead consultant has a menu of services and the recommended time that should be allotted for each. Please review the service menus and let them know if you have any questions. To book a consultant, please complete the following steps: Review the menu of services for the topic or need of interest. Complete and submit the Consultant Request Form. Once the form is received, the consultant will respond within 48 hours to ask additional questions if necessary and confirm dates. A confirmation email will be sent regarding the date. The consultant will be in touch prior to the requested date to go over final details and verify information. *Please note that the sooner you submit your request for a consultant, the greater the chance your date will be available. There may be times that dates and times selected cannot be matched do to calendar conflicts.
