TERM one 2019 : issue no 1
Kia ora. Nau mai, hoki mai. Term One has gone quickly, and it has been rewarding and eventful. To all of our new whānau, welcome. I hope that you are enjoying your time with Lytton High School so far, and that it is rewarding and challenging. We do our best to provide a welcoming environment and extend every student where we meet them. To our returning whānau, welcome back. As you embark on the next year of your educational journey here at Lytton I hope that you are embracing the opportunities available to you and making the best of what you can. Term One has seen a huge amount of engagement and success across our school community, from sporting endeavours to performances in the arts, public speaking and much more. We are immensely proud of our students and their achievements, many of which you will have the opportunity to read about in the coming pages. Well done to all of those involved, and we look forward to seeing our students continue to shine as the year goes on. As the weather starts to turn and we head into winter, I would like to take the opportunity to remind whānau of the school’s uniform requirements. They can be viewed here, or students can see them in any classroom in the school. Please make sure that students are dressed appropriately, and encourage them to take pride in their uniform; we do! Finally, as we head into Term Two, I would just like to encourage students to put their best foot forward in everything they do this term; whether you are a sports person, a performer, an academic, or haven’t found your niche yet, in all things strive to do your best. Your teachers are here to help and support you in this goal, so don’t be afraid to ask us for help. Ngā mihi nui, Wiremu Elliott. P.S. Please enjoy this acoustic rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody

WELCOME TO Ben Roberts Kia Ora! My name is Ben Roberts and this year I am new to teaching and new to Gisborne! I'm excited to join the Lytton Community and share my passion of Science and Maths with our learners. Originally I come from the Hawkes Bay, but have studied and worked in Christchurch for some time. Term One has been incredible getting to know my students and their whanau. Bring on the next few terms! Beatrice Papazoglou Kia ora! My name is Beatrice Papazoglou, and I come from a mixed Greek/New Zealand background. I hold a B.A. in Classics, Theatre and English from Victoria University, as well as a Bachelor in Performing Arts from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School. After eleven years teaching in International schools in China, Singapore and Kazakhstan, I returned to Aotearoa last year to complete my Secondary Teaching Diploma in my hometown of Wellington. I am very happy to be serving as a Drama and Classics teacher at Ritana/Lytton, here in beautiful Gisborne - I love to teach as part of a community, and this is a wonderful place to do it Cat Jones Hi my name is Cat Jones and I am the new receptionist at the Health Centre/Te Kahu Whitiki Kura. I've had 18 years in the health field (mostly in Wairoa) before making the move to Gisborne just over a year ago. I've been at Lytton for a few weeks now and have really been enjoying it. The students have all been polite and friendly (and patient!) and the staff I've met so far are very welcoming. I look forward to meeting more staff and students as the weeks go by. Nga mihi, Cat Ele Rogers New Trades Assistant. Since leaving Lytton in 2006 I have worked in a number of roles including landscaping, native revegetation and pest plant management. I have had the opportunity to work both in New Zealand and Australia in these fields. I moved back to Gisborne in 2014 to be closer to whanau and raise my kids. I am excited to be back at Lytton working alongside so many familiar faces, and am looking forward to what 2019 has to offer.

Students strike for climate change
Lytton High School students Phoebe Bock, Scarlet Conquest, Ava Grace Williams, Hikitoa Tautau, Ashanti Paea-Niwa, Kaea Rennie and Deakon Nepe-Milne joined the Students Strike for Climate Change on Friday 15 March. The strike was organised by Gisborne Girls High School student Lucy Coulston and included students from all four city high schools. Our roopu were initially feeling nervous about joining the strike because they had never been involved with this kind of action, however, the feedback from the group revealed a real sense of pride and excitement. This was a great example of how real world issues are excellent contexts for deeper learning to occur. Both Kaea and Hikitoa were interviewed by the Gisborne Herald about why they chose to join this global strike. They both replied with insight into the threat our rangatahi are facing if we choose to not do enough to reduce Climate change.
Year 9 and 10 Food explored a " Teenage party theme" for their term assessment. This encouraged them to cook food that they thought was appropriate to have at a party that they might organise. Year 9 Fashion went crazy with their 'dream catchers" creating some little works of art. The Fashion students added some flair to hand towels with fabric and trims... hopefully a gift for Nan/Aunty or dear old mum

survival of the fittest
13 Survival of the Fittest is a Physical Education course which offers 7 Level 3 Physical Education credits and 6 Level 2 Outdoor Recreation unit standards. The course has a major Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC) focus. Students have shown great enthusiasm and interest in tramping and camping in our local area. 16 students tramped 9km’s into Koranga Forks Hut in the Ureweras where the students camped in tents and had to demonstrate how to prepare for camping, establish a campsite, experience camp living, and leave campsites with minimal impact on the environment. Students have also demonstrated how to prepare for day tramps and prepare meals on gas cookers. Students fished, swam and lit a fire using flint at this tramp. Our second tramp was a mission to conquer Mt Hikurangi. Here students were joined by our 13 Academic Physical Education class. We tramped up to the hut set up camp and then woke up at 4am for the ascent to the trig where we were lucky enough to see the sunrise. 17 students made it to the top to watch this magical moment. Students showed great attitude and commitment on this tramp and learnt about the safety aspects of planning an expedition like this. Our final tramp will be to complete the 46km tramp around Lake Waikaremoana. I look forward to seeing how the students apply all the skills learnt in class and on our 2 previous tramps.

Blending classroom study with on the job learning, our Primary ITO Trades Academy Year 11, 12 & 13 students have had a busy term with trips to an Orchard, Cattle sale and Mr Wins farm (drenching and dagging lambs). Along with getting their gardens weeded and planted and completing classroom unit standards. Our Year 12 students are all working towards securing a work placement, with one student participating in a beekeeping course. They have been busy working on completing their fencing skills - tying knots and repairing broken wires. Our Year 13 students continue with their classroom Unit Standards while sharing their knowledge in the gardens with the Year 12 students. They are working towards work placement early Term Two.

2018 JUNIOR PRIZEGIVING
2018 junior PRIZEGIVING CONT.
Lawn Bowls On Tuesday and Wednesday 26 -27 March 2019, Paige Richter competed in the National Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls Girls Singles tournament played in Auckland. Paige played a total of nine games and won 7/9 games. In the tournament there were 30 girl competitors. On the first day Paige was undefeated until her last game where she lost. Although she had a loss she had enough points under her belt to automatically qualify to the top 8. Paige played girls from all areas of New Zealand. On Paige’s first game in the qualifiers she won 2 straight sets. Paige then went on to play a fellow Gisborne player from Campion College. This game was the semis so the battle was tough. Paige lost the first set and won the second set. In order for them to have a winner they had to play a tie breaker. This was a very tough final end. Paige won the end by centimetres. Paige moved onto the finals to play a girl from Waiheke High School. In the finals Paige put up a good fight but sadly went down Paige was presented with 2nd place in New Zealand Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls. From this tournament Paige learnt to never give up when the game gets tough, keep going until the final bell rings. Tairawhiti Lawn Bowls Co-ordinator for the area Anne Day sent me an email which read in part: The school should be so proud of Paige getting through to the finals of the Sec Schools Lawn Bowls tournament in Auckland. She beat Angela from Campion in the semi-finals. Ashli from Boys High only just missed out on qualifying, so all 3 Gizzy kids did us proud! All 3 were also great ambassadors for their schools and were a delight to travel with. Ka mau te wehi Paige. ECNI Athletics We are rebuilding. The loss this year of our senior girls to university and the like meant we would not be a competitive threat to other schools in the sprints, long & triple jumps and 4 x 100 relay in particular. The 4 x 100 Girls relay is an event we have had great success with over the years. This year’s athletes, numbered 10 of which 5 were 'newbies’. It was always going to be tough. But I was hopeful of us giving a good account of ourselves. For example, young Raenin Pihema is Lytton’s Intermediate Boys high Jump champion with a jump of 1.80M. However, after running sprints then backing up in the high jump, went out with a best of 1.50M. The winning jump on the day was 1.75M to Hastings Boys High School. Merlin Parsons out did himself in the 400M, although not placed, he was only 4 seconds off the schools 400M record. Kyle McVey ran a staggering 2.26 in the Intermediate Boys 800M. The Lytton record in that event is 2:22. Rubi Perano holds the Lytton High Intermediate Girls long jump record with 4.79M. She wasn’t placed at this meet, but just to let you know the winning jump was 4:72M. Just to share with you a true story. The 1997 Lytton Senior Boys 4 x 100 relay team have held the ECNI record with a time of 43.3. Can the present group emulate that feat? Well, we had Cole Bava starting, passing the baton onto Merlin Parsons, then onto young gun Tasman Gurau still only a junior, with Luke Edwards our finisher. What a buzz, The Napier Boys in the lane next to us were quick with blistering speed, I mean really, really quick. They went on to win, I reckon we were caught up in their draught which helped a wee bit. We were not placed. But I said to the team afterward, not knowing the times, that…they ought to be proud because they were in a race where the 4 x 100 Senior boys relay record held by Lytton since 1997 may have been broken and that they would be a part of history to come. Napier did it in 43.99. Triathlon A 750m swim, a 20km road cycle followed by a 5km road run awaited a group of 15 Year 13 Lytton High School students. In wet conditions all students dug deep to complete the course. Results: 1st Senior Boy: Tyler Evans 1st Senior Girl: Georgia Teneti Boys Football With the change of sporting season Lytton has entered two teams into the GISBORNE Men’s Football Competition. LHS 1st XI and LHS 2nd XI both play on Saturday afternoons. Fixture information can be found in the Gisborne Herald on Wednesdays. The school Football Captain is Sonny Brady.
