Penny Tax Passes in November 6th Election
HILTON HEAD ISLAND-Bluffton Chamber of commerce
Everyone had a good time!
We couldn’t have asked for a better kick-off to the Holiday Season in Hilton Head and Bluffton than Taste of the Season. The first-ever event at USCB’s Hilton Head Hospitality Management Campus was a beautiful showcase for the new campus and for our thirty-eight restaurant and food & beverage members. The event, hosted both in a tent and inside the just-opened building, welcomed over 500 attendees.
We would like to thank all of the volunteers and event partners, including Dr. Panu, Charlie Calvert, Kerri Olivetti and USCB’s Hospitality Management Students, Hilton Head Island High School’s Sarah Beachkofsky and her Event Management Students, our Chamber Ambassadors, Young Professionals, and all other volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Thank you to our Taste of the Season Sponsors!
The food and beverages were divine
The venue was impressive

Department of Revenue Sets Date
for New Sales Tax Collection
The SC Department of Revenue has announced it will begin the collection of the penny sales tax for transportation by retail establishments. A department spokeswoman says the tax goes into effect May 1, 2019. Local businesses affected should watch for a notice from SC DOR by mail, as well as through their MyDORWAY online tax portals.
The penny referendum, also called the penny tax, was passed at the November 6th election with a significant number of voters saying "Yes to the Penny!" The one cent transportation sales tax, slated to last four years or until $120 million is raised for transportation projects across the county, will include $80 million for projects on Hilton Head Island, $30 million for a corridor project on Lady’s Island, and $10 million for county sidewalk and pathway improvements.
Because the chamber knew the importance of protecting the safety of our residents and visitors, we were actively engaged in supporting the efforts of the Citizens for Better Roads and Bridges, a group of concerned citizens who joined together to create, support, and advocate for the referendum.
ADVOCACY AT WORK
Chamber Public Policy Council to Determine 2019 Legislative Agenda
The Chamber’s Public Policy Council will spend December reviewing and revising the Legislative Agenda. This working document steers Chamber policy stances on local, state and federal issues. The chamber has already identified its 2019 policy priorities to include workforce/housing, travel promotion and transportation, and infrastructure needs. Public Policy Council meetings are open to all chamber members. They include in-depth policy updates, special guest speakers, and robust conversation around issues of concern. Meetings are held the first Friday of every month at 8 a.m. in the Chamber boardroom. The December meeting is scheduled for December 7th.
Chamber's Business Workforce Coalition Provides Input Into Workforce Housing
The Town of Hilton Head Island is conducting a housing study and has asked the chamber's Business Workforce Coalition to provide valuable input. Housing study consultant, Lisa Sturtevant, met with the coalition to gather data on needs, barriers and solutions to the island’s workforce housing challenges for her report. Ms. Sturtevant plans to release a preliminary needs assessment in the next week. The full study continues through Spring, 2019. The chamber will continue to provide updates as they are released.
Workforce housing is among the largest obstacle for our local businesses to attract and retain qualified workers. Without an adequate workforce, our businesses, residents, and visitors are all impacted.
The need for additional workforce housing most directly affects our businesses in the hospitality, food, and retail sectors. However, there is also a significant impact on our ability to attract teachers, nurses, firefighters, municipal workers, and others that are critical to maintaining the high quality of life we enjoy on Hilton Head Island, in Bluffton and throughout Beaufort County.
The Business Workforce Coalition brings together more than twenty employers representing 4500+ jobs on Hilton Head Island and Bluffton. They serve as the unified voice for a stable and secure workforce now and in the future and are committed to pursuing housing solutions in our communities that are affordable.
Transportation Referendum Approved—Bridge Discussions Begin
One of the projects to receive funding from the now-approved one cent transportation sales tax is the replacement of one of the bridges coming onto Hilton Head Island. In a recent meeting of the SC Department of Transportation, discussions began around the determination of the project timeline and priorities. Additionally, an environmental assessment is underway which must be completed in advance of any design proposals. To receive updates and more information on the project, visit www.scdot278corridor.com.

Public art weaves an important thread into the fabric of our communities. It can be a visual expression of our community’s values, it enhances and transforms our environment, it spurs conversation, and it raises our communal conscious.
Viewing public art is a terrific family activity. And right now is a great time to experience public art because the 2018 Public Art Exhibition, sponsored by the Public Art Fund of Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, is on display at Coastal Discovery Museum. Take this opportunity to get out of the house, breathe in some fresh air, and spend some quality family time. But be warned: Exposing your children to public art may prompt thoughtful questions, spark meaningful family conversation, and awaken video game-dulled creativity.
The exhibition includes 19 large-scale sculptures installed at Honey Horn and one piece located in the terminal at Hilton Head Airport. Some of the pieces are whimsical, some are serious, some are colorful, and some are kinetic. It’s a terrific family outing, especially if you’re looking for something fun to do with your kids or grandkids during holiday break.
The exhibition is free, open during regular Coastal Discovery Museum hours,
and runs through January.

Coastal Plains Insurance
Coastal Plains became a Chamber Champion Pinnacle Level sponsor, which is the highest sponsorship level you can have at the chamber, because from my perspective it was simply a matter of responsibility to our community.
When we came here, one of the things we wanted to do was build a strong presence in the community. I found that with the strength of the Hilton Head-Bluffton Chamber, and the connections I could make through the chamber, I was able to do two things: number one, to network, meet local business owners to figure out what was going on in the community and, number two, to receive the benefits that being a champion member gives you.
For us, being a chamber champion is not only a way to participate in the chamber, it's a way to participate in a level that is meaningful for us. We get access to events such as State of the Region, the Chamber Ball, and Taste of the Season. We get access to all activities the chamber provides.

The Power of Media Partnerships
Hosting Matt Hranek, Condé Nast Traveler Editor, for the Concours d’Elegance continues to pay dividends for the Destination. Matt, who also has a popular online series called “Time and Place,” chose Hilton Head Island as his next location to discuss his love for cars and vintage watches.
Matt's additional bonus editorial on Hilton Head Island is further evidence of the importance of building media partnerships, and how media buys extend well beyond the investment made. Matt so enjoyed his experience here on Hilton Head Island with our amazing community partners, accommodations, events, cuisine, beach, etc., that the above-and-beyond editorial content he produced is something we could not have paid for.
