Weather Lab 2015 Grant Recipient: Paul Kaldahl Weather instruments enhance science education for eighth graders by allowing students to use hands-on tools that physically show them the phenomena they are studying. Students work together outside, taking weather observations, with the goal of analyzing current weather and interpreting data to make future predictions.
Eudora Schools Foundation Teacher Excellence Grant Recipients
Text
As I look back over my years as a student in public education, there are numerous teachers who I remember fondly for sparking a love of learning in me and an eagerness to explore the world around me. My gratitude for those teachers who touched my life so deeply is immeasurable. As I watch my own children move through Eudora Schools, I am equally struck by the influence of innovative teachers and the impact that grants from the Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF) have already made in their lives and in the lives of the hundreds of students across our schools. I am thankful to the business partners and generous donors who have stepped up to support the efforts of ESF as we seek to reward teacher excellence, enrich the student experience, and make our community its very best. Just last month the ESF awarded more than $10,000 in grants and I look forward to seeing the impact this has on our students and community. I eagerly await the day when my own children, and yours, look back on their days at Eudora schools and recall fondly the teachers who sparked their learning and the generous community that helped to shape their future. As John Dewey stated over a century ago, “What the best and wisest parent wants for his child, that must we want for all the children of the community.”
I have found that our small community is passionate about our schools and the role that public education plays in making Eudora great for generations after generations. It was the community’s passion and the excellent reputations of the schools that brought my husband and me to the district in 2001. It didn’t take long for my family to experience the “I Love Eudora Schools” mentality and to realize other families in Eudora (whether native or newly located) are mighty and generous in their support of our students, our teachers, and our schools. When it comes to giving our Eudora students the education they need and deserve, public funds are simply inadequate. ESF helps to fill that gap, allowing Eudora Schools to sustain and expand innovative programs that might otherwise disappear from schools. And filling that gap is what our first ever annual campaign, "I Love Eudora Schools $30K," will address and where we need your support. The Foundation needs fellow community members to step up and show their continued commitment to our students and to our teachers. This campaign will fund innovative academic initiatives through classroom grants, student enrichment programs, staff development and recognition, and ultimately grow our endowment to ensure student success, today and long into the future. As you look through this publication you will see the investment and contributions from our community to make our schools the best – our small community makes quite the impact - we are mighty, we are generous, join us in our continued efforts!
Sensory Accommodations 2016 Grant Recipients: Hillary Brunin, Nicole Ramirez, Meghan Reardon, and Jennifer Sweany Sensory accommodation tools will help special education and general education students who may have difficulty focusing, controlling their body, and who may require assistance with modulating their sensory system to fully engage in learning. These resources allow students to have increased time learning, socializing, and engaging with their peers.

Wacom Intuous Drawing Tablets 2015 Grant Recipient: Eric Magette Drawing tablets allow high school students to use technology to interact with course material in a way that is more meaningful and relevant to them. Instead of simply filling out worksheets and labeling diagrams, students can create their own representation of structures and processes that are discussed in class.

When you walk into the Eudora Middle School (EMS) library you are greeted with the sound of students’ legs moving up and down, and you notice their eyes are continually darting across the pages of the books in their hands. It isn’t something you typically see in a school library, a group of 12 stationary bikes with students actively engaged in pedaling and reading at the same time. These students are taking part in the EMS Read & Ride Lab. Physical health instructor, Mitchell Tegtmeier, worked to create a bike lab for students to use. Teachers are encouraged to bring their class to the lab to read over material while at the same time exercising. Since January, students have burned more than 105,000 calories and have rode more than 5,500 miles. But exercise is only half of the benefit, and teachers are eager to have their students pedaling on the bikes. “The increased blood flow to a students’ brain has shown to be positive for increasing memory, reading comprehension, and reading retention. So there is some science behind it,” said Tegtmeier. The Read & Ride Lab has been successful for this age group of middle school students because they are excited about their education and they are willing to try new things. “I think initially, it was just so new, kids were so excited to try it,” said Tegtmeier, “Their reaction was surprise, excitement, they could not believe we have exercise bikes in our school. It has been a big success.” Tegtmeier got the idea after seeing a television clip of a teacher on the East Coast that initially put bicycles in his classroom for students with disabilities. Tegtmeier began thinking about how he could implement the idea at EMS, but he felt the need to modify it. He decided the Read & Ride Lab needed to benefit everyone. “That is kind of how it got started. I went home and told my wife that I just saw the coolest thing and that I had to try it. I don’t know where the money is going to come from, but I have to try putting together a bicycle lab. She is a reading teacher and she said that would be kind of cool,” said Tegtmeier. Tegtmeier then applied for funding through the Eudora Schools Foundation’s Teacher Excellence Grants. His innovative proposal was awarded the most monetary amount ever given out to a single grant applicant by the Eudora Schools Foundation (ESF). “It’s grant proposals like Mitch’s that gets the Board excited to stand behind and support. His big idea and plan of execution was exactly what the Board was looking for during the grant process,” said David Barnhart, past ESF Board President. “The Board approved funding for six bicycles Mitch had requested. He used this seed money to apply for a matching grant for the remaining bicycles.” The Foundation’s seed money helped Tegtmeier apply for more funding through the Douglas County Community Foundation and LiveWell Lawrence to purchase a total of 12 stationary bikes. One of the biggest surprises for Tegtmeier is the attention EMS has received since opening the lab earlier this year. There has been a lot of interest from all over the United States including a visit from U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins. “All around the country, people are emailing me asking me where I got the idea, how it got started, where the money came from,” said Tegtmeier, “Initially, we posted pictures on Facebook and from there it went crazy…East Coast, West Coast, Texas, Channel 6 Lawrence, Fox4 Kansas City, two different groups from the University of Kansas,

CARDINAL HOTSPOT EUDORA SCHOOLS FOUNDATION
Gambino’s Pizza has partnered with the Eudora Schools Foundation to create a “Cardinal Hotspot” in their restaurant. The hotspot will provide Internet access outside of school hours for high school students that do not have access to the Internet in their home. Principal Ron Abel said, “Many of our students don’t actually have Internet access at home, and in fact for several of them this is the first time to have a computer in the household.”

Read & Ride Lab cont. lots of educators across the country…it has been pretty cool.” Tegtmeier has enjoyed all the interest, but more importantly he truly cares what the students are getting out of the experience. He feels it is so important to provide and look for innovation and creative opportunities for these students even with the current constraints of state educational funding. “It is essential to show kids how to be innovative, to see it first hand, to look outside the box for opportunities,” said Tegtmeier, “Because of current state funding...a lot of times we as teachers don’t have all of our needs, let alone wants met. This year, I was allocated $125 for my health and physical education budget. I was able to purchase a few basketballs, a couple of kickballs, and a whiffle ball set and that is all, that is what you get.” Having the opportunity to apply for funding from the ESF is critical in order to provide innovative resources to students Tegtmeier points out. He says students realize when their teachers work to provide opportunities for them, they recognize their teachers care, students provide more academic investment into their education, and the students are willing to work harder to use the new resources. “Big thank you to the Foundation for being supportive of all my applications, it has been great. The teachers have done a good job of getting kids in here to the Read & Ride lab, the kids have been awesome using it,” Tegtmeier said, “I am thankful, $2,500 is a lot of money and I am just very appreciative of the Foundation for their support.”
