I have been told by those much wiser than me when it is time to retire you will know and that time has come. At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, I will be retiring from the Island Height School District with a total of 40 years in teaching, 33 years of which have been spent at Island Heights. It was one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make.
I have been extremely blessed in my teaching career to work with administration, colleagues, and staff members who are not only professional in our field, but are also extremely kind and caring individuals whose first priority has always and will continue to be the students.
I am so thankful for the community always being so kind, accepting, generous, and supportive of our school district and me. It has been a pleasure to work in such a special school district and I will always miss working with your wonderful children.
Mrs. Charlene Mass
Summer is here in Island Heights! Our students and staff ended the 2017-18 school year on a very exciting and successful note! Our promotional ceremony was great with the focus on the “Cool Cats” who will be moving on to middle school in the fall. Their speeches and presentations were exemplary and at the same time wonderful and emotional tributes to their families. Their traditional banner was unveiled and their gift to the school, a dozen sea devil umbrellas was graciously accepted.
Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Charlene Mass on her retirement after many years of service to the Island Heights Grade School. Mrs. Mass will be missed by all and we wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement.
Enjoy your summer and please Be Safe!
Term: Summer | Issue 10| Date: June 30, 2018
3rd Grade Visitation
Mr. Carl Brodbeck came in to speak to students about his home, which is referred to as the Dillon House. This is the oldest house in the town of Island Heights and has a lot of great history. Thank you Mr. Brodbeck for sharing your stories!

In June, Mrs. Seltenrich's class did a non fiction unit and learned about the job of a nonfiction author, and why it is important to read and study nonfiction texts. Their focus was on ocean life and students looked at a variety of materials including books and videos. From there, they worked together to complete graphic organizers that were used to assist in writing and illustrating "All About Ocean Animals" nonfiction books. To culminate the unit, the classroom was turned into an underwater scene, which included the writing and projects completed by the students.
The IHGS held it's annual Flag Day Celebration. The entire school was joined by local community members to celebrate "Old Glory"! The IHGS also congratulated Officer Patti Burns on her retirement. Officer Patti served as the school's DARE officer for many years. Thank you Officer Patti for your hard work and dedication to our community. Thank you to all that atttended, especially the IHVFC for having their firetrucks on display.
FIELD DAY/FUN RUN
Congratulations to Shayla Buser! This year's Sixth Grade "Unsung Hero"!
Congratulations to Mrs. Dosio! This year's "Teacher of the Year"!
What a great day! The students spent the morning participating in traditional Field Day fun! Thanks to Mr. Legendre and the staff for organizing the activities. Thank you also to the PTO for providing watermelon and oranges for the students.
In the afternoon, the IHGS PTO held their annual Fun Run. The students raised money through pledges and ran up and back Lake Avenue! They were greeted by the Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company truck and were "cooled down" with the spray hose! Once again they raised enough money to have another fun-filled carnival. Thanks to the PTO and staff for organizing these great year-end events!
TEACHER OF THE YEAR
On June 7th, the IHGS held their Annual Quick Draw Competition. Students from Grades 3-6 competed against each other in this math game. Congratulations to Anastasia Wudzki on winning! Thanks to all who participated and a special thanks to Mrs. Romano and Mrs. LeBlanc for organizing this event!
On May 30th, the IHGS and the IHGS Band held it's Annual Spring Concert. The choral portion was led by Mrs. Alison Walk and the Band by Mr. Carl Brodbeck. As always, the evening was a great success and showed off our many talented students here at the Island Heights Grade School!

PROJECT TEAM PICNIC
Happy Summer Break! Don't forget to join the Island Heights Grade School as they participate
in the Founder's Day Parade on July 28th! Details will follow closer to this date via email!
Did we ever doubt our students would reach their 75,0000 ticket goal? No way! IHGS is "IN THE HOUSE"! Through our Project TEAM Program, a character education based rewards system, our students earned their goal of 75,000 tickets. Tickets were given throughout the year for positive displays of behavior. The students met many goals during the year, but were rewarded with a big celebration in June. The entire staff and student body went to Veteran's Park in Bayville and enjoyed a "family style" picnic complete with games, food and, probably one of their favorites, throwing water balloons at the staff! Great job to all of our students!
