Last semester's Welcome Event was full of positive energy! Students felt very touched by Dr. Joel Levine's welcoming words.
In this issue, I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the importance of positive thinking and stress management. My hope is to contribute positive and relevant information that might be useful in the future for you. According to experts in the field, "The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits." I'd like to be honest with you, a couple of years ago, I didn't know that being constantly under stress played an important role in my overall health outcomes. Back then, I wasn't well aware that stress could harm my mind and body, all at the same time. Moreover, because I was lacking that knowledge, I just kept telling myself "Oh this is just stress, I know how to handle it, I will do just fine" Well! Years later, I found out that my overall health was not as good as I thought. I didn't know how crucial it is to learn how to cope with daily stress, and most importantly to let go of all that unwanted thoughts in my mind. It took me several visits to the specialist and getting informed on stress management to be able to understand the importance of knowing how to manage stress in a more positive way. With this said, I am not saying stress is always bad, there is good stress and bad stress. For instance, you may experience good stress when you are getting ready for a job interview. Which is totally okay for it will help you to perform better. On the other hand, an example of bad stress could be when you are getting into an argument with someone and you don't know how to cope with this situation. If you don't know how to get rid of this negative feeling, this whole situation is controlling how you feel and it can last for years. Stated in the American Psychological Association (APA) Journal, "When stress starts interfering with your ability to live a normal life for an extended period, it becomes even more dangerous. The longer the stress lasts, the worst it is for both your mind and body." So yes, it is very important to be informed on stress management and most important how to introduce positive thinking in our lives. Your health will very much thank you in the future. With this said, I'd like to provide some links below that might be of your interest. By Angelina Barrera References: www.apa.org www.mayoclinic.com https://www.berkeleywellbeing.com

My Brief Journey at SWC By Alberto Rodriguez When I started last semester, I started classes late because registration period was already closed. So, instead I decided to register for noncredit ESL classes where I met Professor Carol Stuardo, who invited me to join her class (ESL noncredit class). In that moment, I didn't know a lot of English and that was my opportunity to learn and improve my English. Professor Carol Stuardo is a great, passionate, and dedicated Professor. I really improved and learned more English, and it was hard at the beginning, but with time and dedication, I made it. If you ask me if I recommend this noncredit ESL class at Southwestern College than I would say, Absolutely yes! Now, I started to speak English more comfortable and this spring I will register for ESL credit classes. Angelina Barrera, the ESL Advocate is a great resource, she helped me to apply for financial aid, and also explained all the steps. She gave me information on ESL classes and all the ESL levels. Also, she explained to me what my options are to complete the ESL Academic Program, for example, to take a challenge exam if I wanted to be on a higher ESL level. Without no doubt I would recommend her, and if you have the opportunity to come visit her in her office to get information about ESL classes and college resources, I would really suggest you do.

When Spring Goes When spring came, the little girl enjoyed the beauty of its many colors, the brightness of the heaven and the singing of the birds. If only this could last forever. After many springs, the winter came. The girl was little no more. Since then, the brightness and singing lost their joy. Even though today, the reminiscence of light and song lives in her mind, she knows that the spring is gone. Although she wants to love the beauty of colors once again, it will not be more springs for her, if the winter never goes. The Lion The lion runs. He runs fast and confident with his audacity and vigor. When he look back, he realizes how far he has gone. He tries to go back, but there is no way to return for the damages on the pathway he has left. Back there, there is a dying flower, but someday it will rain, bringing her beauty, and making her bloom again. The lion thinks, how he can repair the pathway. Then the rain comes, the flower blooms again, and the lion hides his tears with the rain. By Diana Bencic

For the first time, the ESL Department hosted an end of the semester ESL Student Potluck in November 29 at the Student Union East. Students and faculty had the opportunity to spend a lovely afternoon sharing food and eating popcorn while playing board games. Although it was a rainy day, we had so much fun! Also, I'd like to mention that Professor Courtney Bussell is a board games expert! She enjoyed teaching ESL students how to play and at the same time they were learning new vocabulary through these games. Overall, we had so much fun interacting with each other, and we are looking forward to host this event every fall to help ESL students strengthen their sense of community at Southwestern College. #1 Catch one's eye: attract one's attention/interest. "This brochure about Tahiti caught my eye when I was at the travel agency." #2 Change one's mind: decide to do something different from what had been decided earlier. A: "Why are you working this week? I thought you were going to be on vacation." B: "I changed my mind. I'm taking my vacation next month." #3 Chow: food. "How's the chow in the university cafeteria?" #4 Couch potato: someone who spends too much time watching TV. "You're a real couch potato, Jay. You need to get more exercise!" #5 Cut it out!: stop doing something (that's annoying). "You kids are making too much noise. Cut it out!" References: www.eslcafe.com www.cambridge.org
